Runners compete at Nike Heartland

More than 1,000 cross country runners, including harriers from the Black Hills area competed at the Nike Cross National Heartland Regional Cross Country Championship in Sioux Falls on Saturday.

Runners from Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin participated in the meet.

Rapid City Central sophomore Tony Smoragiewicz was the highest placing South Dakotan, finishing sixth overall with a time of 15 minutes, 48 seconds and is one of five individuals qualifying for the Nike National Meet in Portland on Dec. 5.

The Cobblers’ Eric Sanders finished 124th in a time of 17:19.20, while teammate Caleb Marler finished 177th in a time of 17:52.30 in the championship race.

Riley Coates, a junior from Rapid City Stevens, finished 26th in a time of 16:14.30 in the championship race. Central’s Bryce Olson finished in a time of 17:58 in the boys open race.

Sturgis’ Madeleine Takahashi was the top South Dakotan female, finishing 21st in a time of 19:02.30.

Douglas’ Bailey Eich finished 114th in a time of 20:52.79, while  Lottie Grimshaw of Todd County finished 134th in a time of 21:37.22 in the championship race.

Rapid City Stevens’ Sarah Coomes also competed in the girls open race.

The top two boys teams — Eden Prairie and Wayzata — and the top two girls teams — Dowling Catholic and  Elk River Runners — advanced to the Nike Cross Nationals.
