RAPID CITY - The Mitchell, Platte-Geddes, and Tripp-Delmont/Armour cheerleaders were chosen as the "Spirit of Six" Award winners at their tournaments on Saturday night.
Mitchell members include: Kayla Skufca, McKaylyn Bruce, Ashley Wagner, Brandee Miller, Sydney Dragseth, Mikella Thompson and Anna Schneider. The cheer coach is Amber Goldammer.
Platte-Geddes members include: Emily Nachtigal, Sara Schoenfelder, Rhona Nelson, Kasya Marlo and Brooke Kemnitz. Marla Tegethoff coaches the cheerleaders.
Tripp-Delmont/Amour's cheer team includes: Jana Sanders, Angela Hanson, Whitney Wright, Larissa Buchholz, Ashley Weber, Jennifer Iedema and Nicole Youngbluth. The cheer coach is Roxanne Wentz.
The award is named in honor of the six Rapid City Cobbler cheerleaders who were killed in a plane crash returning from the 1968 state A tournament in Sioux Falls.
The South Dakota Peace Officer's Association has presented trophies to the cheerleaders considered best on crowd control, dress, sportsmanship and enthusiasm at the state tournaments every year since the accident.
