STURGIS - Spearfish downed Sturgis, 7-2, in a tennis dual between the two Northern Hills I-90 rivals on Thursday afternoon.
"Despite the wet, cool and windy conditions there was some pretty good tennis that was played," said Sturgis head coach Beau Garcia. "Spearfish is a much improved team over last year."
The Spartans got singles wins from Audrey Swisher and Hannah Parrett before the Scoopers rallied with wins from Stacy Davison and Lauren Takahashi.
Spearfish then prevailed in the final two singles matches as Christine Bergmann and Rachel Deichert recorded wins.
The No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches both went to tiebreakers with Spearfish winning both to close out the match.
"I thought we played pretty decent, with the weather and all," said Garcia.
"Those were some real close games in doubles that could have gone either way."
Sturgis drops to 0-8 on the season and will travel to play Gillette today.
The Scoopers will then host Stevens on Tuesday.
