MITCHELL - Ben Hansen scored the winning run in the seventh inning as Rapid City defeated Pierre, 6-5, on Sunday to win the state VFW Teener 13-14-year-old Majors division championship.
Turner Donahue's double, his third of the game, just eluded the diving attempt of Pierre center fielder Adam Deneke, allowing Hansen to score the winning run.
Starting pitcher Hayden Hast limited top-seeded Pierre to one unearned run over the first four innings
Hansen had four hits, Donahue three and Danny Bareis chipped in a pair of RBI hits. Hast had a triple for Rapid City.
The tournament began with seeding games against Brandon and Brookings.
The Brandon game ended up a prolonged affair after Rapid City jumped out to a 6-0 lead, only to see rain halt the game until the following morning.
Jake Bohne, who had struck out four batters in the first two innings, had to be lifted because of the pitching rules. James Carlson and Bareis limited Brandon to two runs over the final five frames to seal the victory.
Michael Kelly, Riley Coates, Seth Johnson and Hansen all had two hits for Rapid City.
The Brookings game saw pitcher Brandon Petersen battle through some early control issues. Still, he held Brookings to one run and one hit over the first four frames. Johnson and Hansen then combined to finish the game for Rapid.
Bohne and Coates had two hits for Rapid City.
The tournament was so tightly contested that Rapid City ended up with a fourth seed after allowing only four runs in two games. This proved to be a stroke of luck as they were able to play the early playoff game Saturday night. Because of the rain, the late games ended just after midnight.
Rapid City drew Yankton and flexed its offensive muscles immediately, putting up 11 runs in the first two innings en route to a 15-0, 3-inning whitewashing.
Johnson, Bohne, Donahue and Bobby Smith each had two hits for Rapid City.
In the semifinals against Aberdeen, Bohne struck out 10 over seven innings in a pitching duel between the two teams. Three Aberdeen pitchers matched Bohne's strikeout total.
The game was tied 1-1 after seven innings. James Carlson hit a sacrifice fly for the lone Rapid run, and Justin Kolb had singled up the middle to plate Aberdeen's run.
After Bohne struck out Aberdeen's best hitter in the bottom of the seventh to escape a bases-loaded jam, Turner Donahue hit a sacrifice fly on an attempted intentional walk to drive in Hansen.
Hansen then pitched the eighth to preserve the 2-1 win, setting up the title tilt with Pierre. Pierre beat Mitchell,
6-2, in the first semifinal.
Six of the 12 players on the Rapid City roster played on last year's 13-year-old Teener championship team, the first team from Rapid City to ever win the VFW title.
VFW Teener State Minors Tournament
BROOKINGS - Two teams from the Black Hills Baseball Association advanced to the Minors semifinals Saturday at the VFW Teener tournament.
Black Hills 1 beat Yankton, 11-2, to advance to Sunday's semifinals against Pierre. Pitcher Dillon Evans picked up the win.
Black Hills 2 topped Brandon Valley, 7-2, and will play top-seeded Sioux Falls in the other semifinal. Greg Schaefer threw a complete game to pick up win.
before Hansen made his second pitching appearance and earned the win.
