The postseason is here for Class A volleyball teams and the time is now or never for several impressive Black Hills area teams.
In District 16A action, St. Thomas More enters action as the top seed but will be challenged in every match in its hopes of advancing to state.
The Cavaliers open up Tuesday hosting Lead-Deadwood in a matchup that seems to heavily favor More. The Cavaliers downed the Golddiggers three times during the regular season.
"We feel confident, but you don't want to take anything for granted because you are in a do-or-die situation," More head coach Brondon Kandolin said. "We need to focus on one game at a time and not look ahead."
The Cavaliers enter the game with a 27-4 mark, but Kandolin sees plenty of areas where his team could not improve.
"We are still in a learning mode," he said. "Our passing is going to have to be really good so we can run our offense."
Against Lead-Deadwood (7-21 overall), the Cavaliers are looking to have a strong service game to put the pressure on the defense and keep the 'Diggers off balance.
"They have a very talented setter who is very versatile and that can hit when they get a good set," Kandolin said.
In the other matchup in the district, Newell hosts Belle Fourche on Tuesday.
The Broncs have the weaker record of the two teams coming in with a 12-13 mark while Newell posted a 20-14 regular season. However, Belle Fourche comes into the region as one of the hottest teams.
Belle Fourche has posted impressive wins over Custer and Hot Springs recently and took both regular season meetings with Newell, winning both in four games.
"We just played a couple of really good games," Broncs head coach Loree Schlichtemeier said. "They have good athletes, they hustle and this is a new game and anything can happen."
One of the Broncs' biggest keys to their wins against Newell was that they served at a 94 percent clip in their last matchup.
"We know that we have to be ready for every ball to come back over because they get to everything," Schlichtemeier said.
Newell closed out the regular season with a five-set win over Faith.
In District 15, Red Cloud travels to Custer hoping to repeat its performance from earlier in the season when it won in five sets. However, Custer head coach Renae Schneider believes she has a different team on her hands this time around.
"We are playing a lot more like a team," she said. "A couple of weeks ago we got beat by Belle Fourche and we looked at things and we had one player trying to take control instead of playing with the team."
The Wildcats won their last two regular season matches heading into district play which included a five-set win over St. Thomas More. Every team believes they have a legitimate shot of advancing out of the district in what is shaping up to be a wide open race.
The key for the Wildcats against Red Cloud will be their passing.
"We have some good hitters in Melissa Flores, Taava Cooper, Taylor Neugebauer, Allison Kostelecky and Shawna Gibson that we need to be able to get the ball to," Schneider said.
Schneider said Red Cloud has talented hitters as well and her team will need to be blocking well in order to avoid a repeat of the early season result.
Hot Springs enters its matchup with Hill City with more than a little confidence after picking up a pair of convincing three-set wins over the Rangers earlier this season.
"I hate to say it, but unless we have a total falling apart we should win the first match," Hot Springs head coach Stacie Collins said. "I am confident having beaten them twice before and I got a chance to play all of my bench in those games."
The Bison sport a solid all-around squad and have found success against Hill City by attacking their block.
"We were able to hit at them and we serve pretty consistently at them," Collins said.
Collins said the play at the net will be key in any matchup in the region and she is expecting big things from her hitters in Carlie Weiss, Sarah Geiser and Rikki Powell.
"I feel really good about how we played against Douglas on Monday pushing them like we did and we were able to beat St. Thomas More earlier in the season," Collins said.
All matches start at 6 p.m.
