The Hot Springs Bison picked up their first shutout of the season with a 3-0 win over Groton in boys high school soccer action on Saturday afternoon.
"It was a good win for us," Hot Springs head coach David Rooks said. "Groton's a tough team, but we finally got our first goose egg."
The Bison got on the board early when Ryan Merchen lobbed a deep shot over the Groton keeper in the 10th minute.
"It was just a beautiful goal," Rooks said. "He saw the keeper off his line a little ways and chipped it over him from about 20-25 yards out. It was a gorgeous shot."
The win was the fourth in the last five games for Hot Springs (4-5-0). The Bison will play Douglas at Sioux Park in Rapid City at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
ABERDEEN CENTRAL 4, RAPID CITY CENTRAL 0: The Rapid City Central boys soccer team fell to Aberdeen Central 4-0 on Saturday. The Cobblers fell behind 3-0 at halftime and was never able to recover.
"The score doesn't reflect the game because we played well, but every time we made a mistake we paid for it," Cobblers head coach Joe Sabrowski said. "We couldn't finish but we had plenty of chances."
The Cobblers changed goalies in the second half and that slowed down Aberdeen's offense.
Central (1-8 overall) now prepares for its showdown with Rapid City Stevens Monday at Sioux Park. The boys game begins at 8 p.m. but there will be a senior recognition for the senior players and parents between the boys and girls game which starts at 6 p.m.
ST. THOMAS MORE/RAPID CITY CHRISTIAN 3, BELLE FOURCHE 0: The St. Thomas More/Rapid City Christian boys soccer team blanked Belle Fourche 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The Cavaliers scored all of their goals in the first half, beginning with Zane Buhmann who scored on an error by the Belle Fourche defense.
"That first goal kind of opened the door and got the team excited," said St. Thomas More/Rapid City Christian head coach Pete Sales. "We played really good ball and controlled the whole first half."
St. Thomas More/Rapid City Christian (3-5-1 overall) travels to Custer on Thursday.
Poor backside defense by Spearfish helped Sioux Falls Washington to a pair of goals in Warriors 3-0 win on Saturday.
SIOUX FALLS WASHINGTON 3, SPEARFISH 0:
"We did not do a good job of marking their players on the backside and that came back to haunt us," Spartans head coach Jim Hill said. "We had just as many shots as they did but we didn't finish."
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead at halftime and built on that in the second half.
Spearfish fell to 2-4-1 on the season and hosts Rapid City Stevens on Friday.
GIRLS SOCCERThe St. Thomas More/Rapid City Christian girls soccer team overcame a sluggish start and went on to defeat Belle Fourche 4-1 in prep soccer action Saturday.
ST. THOMAS MORE 4, BELLE FOURCHE 1:
After trailing the Broncs early in the first half, the Cavaliers' Maria Gonzalez scored a goal on a pass from Ali Gorder to even things up at 1-1.
Just before halftime, Gonazalez got played in by Emily Fetzer and scored her second goal to give STM a 2-1 lead at the break.
Taylor Dauwen scored on an assist from Gonzalez just 26 seconds into the second half, and Katie Kusser hit a ball that went into the box and Gonzalez cleaned it up for the goal to finish with a hat trick.
St. Thomas More/Rapid City Christian (6-0-2 overall) hosts Belle Fourche on Sept. 30 at Sioux Park.
RAPID CITY STEVENS 8, WATERTOWN 0: Kelsey Opitz and Lindsey Schmidt each scored a pair of goals as No. 2-ranked Rapid City Stevens picked up its eighth straight win with an 8-0 victory over Watertown in a girls soccer match Saturday afternoon.
Schmidt put the Raiders on the scoreboard with a goal in the ninth minute, followed by back-to-back goals from Opitz. Shannon Keller scored on the Watertown keeper to give the Raiders a 4-0 lead at the half.
Schmidt, Haylee Weisgram, Taylor Faulkner and Megan Anderson all scored goals in the second half to close out the scoring for Rapid City Stevens.
"The girls are putting together some great chemistry and having a lot of fun," said Rapid City Stevens head coach Troy Anderson. "They're starting to read each other really well and the biggest thing for us has been our defensive recovery."
Rapid City Stevens (8-2-0 overall) faces cross-town rival Rapid City Central on Monday at 6 p.m. at Sioux Park Stadium.
ABERDEEN CENTRAL 3, RAPID CITY CENTRAL 1: Mallory Carda's goal late in the first half gave Rapid City Central a 1-0 lead at halftime, but Aberdeen Central would respond with three unanswered tallies of its own to win 3-1 on Saturday.
Two of Aberdeen's three goals came off corner kicks to get the win in a game where the Cobblers played well enough to win.
The fast track - Aberdeen plays on an artificial surface - led to some fast-paced action as the Cobblers worked most of the game on its possession and keeping the ball away from Aberdeen on the wide field.
"I thought our girls deserved to win this game, but I can't take anything away from Aberdeen because they played well," Cobblers head coach Mike Austin said.
Rapid City Central (1-7-2 overall) is back in action at 6 p.m. Monday when they play cross-town rival Rapid City Stevens at Sioux Park.
