LEAD - After dropping a trio of games last week, including a pair of overtime heartbreakers, Lead-Deadwood was looking to get back on the winning side of the ledger in its Black Hills Conference varsity boys basketball game against Douglas Tuesday in the Lead-Deadwood High School gymnasium.
Led by Kenny Miller's 23 points and 10 rebounds, the Golddiggers captured a 70-41 victory over the Patriots.
Lead-Deadwood is 7-4 in the BHC and 9-7 overall.
"This win came at a really good time," Lead-Deadwood coach Curt Shaw said.
Douglas did not convert its first basket until the 1:05 mark of the opening period. Miller's trey gave the 'Diggers a 16-4 advantage at the quarter break.
Miller, joining Tommy Anderson, Garret Aman and Kolbey Arsaga, as the four LDHS senior boys basketball players honored on parent-senior night, canned four 3-pointers in the second stanza. Miller netted 17 points in the initial 16 minutes, as the hosts claimed a 33-14 halftime lead.
"When Kenny is shooting the ball that well, he can hit from anywhere," Shaw said.
Tanner Adler chipped in 12 points and Leif Atkinson added nine for the 'Diggers.
Nate Koch paced Douglas' scoring with 14 points. Tarron Teeslink and Jake Rivers tallied nine points each for the Patriots, 1-10 in the BHC and 1-14 overall.
"I was impressed with the way we played defense for three quarters," Shaw said.
"We kept Rivers off the board. They (Patriots) didn't get any uncontested shots."
Lead-Deadwood hosts Newell in a matchup of District 16A foes Friday. Lead-Deadwood, Newell and Belle Fourche are battling for the second seed and home-court advantage in the first round of the District 16A tournament on Feb. 25.
"These last four games are all playoff games for us," Shaw said.
Douglas hosts Belle Fourche on Friday.
