LAS VEGAS - Letcher's Jill Moody had another good round at the National Finals Rodeo.
The South Dakota cowgirl followed up Thursday's first-round win with a second-place finish on Friday during the second round of barrel racing.
She posted a time of 13.96 seconds, just behind Canada's Lindsay Sears (:13.92).
After two rounds, Moody is leading the event with a :27.96 average on two runs.
Oelrichs' Lisa Lockhart took third in the second round with a 13.99-second clocking. She is in fourth overall with a :28.30 average.
The South Dakotans did not fare too well in saddle bronc during second-round action, especially Belvidere's Jeff Willert. The 2005 world champion did take second with an 80-point ride, however, he fractured his right femur during the ride and will miss the rest of the competition because the injury requires surgery.
Willert, who had a score of 80 on Thursday, was second after two rides with a total score of 164.
Rod Hay of Canada won Friday's second round of saddle bronc with a score of 83-1/2. Standings leader Cody DeMoss of Heflin, La., finished fourth on Smoke Jumper and increased his first-place total to $134,349 this season.
Edmond, Okla., cowboy Billy Etbauer, along with South Dakotans Jesse Bail (Camp Crook) and Chad Ferley (Oelrichs), each failed to post a score. Ferley, last year's world champion, is 0-for-2 in this year's NFR.
In bareback riding, Royce Ford of Briggsdale, Colo., claimed first place with a score of 89 points. Rapid City's Scott Montague was 12th with a 79, putting him in seventh for the competition with a 163-1/2 total.
In steer wrestling, NFR rookie Matt Reeves of Pampa, Texas, won with a 3.5-second run.
"Well, getting here was pretty pressured-packed," Reeves said. "Needing to win almost $5,000 in Dallas was pretty heavy, and getting it done in the first round made it a lot easier. It is kind of like wanting to win a check (at the NFR); (there) was a lot of pressure, but getting it done the second night made it pretty good. So that's exciting."
Shawn Greenfield of Lakeview, Ore., placed second in :3.6 and took the PRCA standings lead away from Wade Sumpter of Fowler, Colo., who finished third in :3.7. Greenfield has won $122,169, while Sumpter has made $119,461. Sumpter also is the event leader with an average time of 7.2 over two rounds.
Highmore's Jake Rinehart was unable to post a time in steer wrestling for the second consecutive day.
In other action, Travis Tryan and Michael Jones won the team roping competition for the second straight night, tying Jimmy Edens and Ryan Motes for the top spot Friday.
Header Tryan, from Billings, Mont., and heeler Jones, from Stephenville, Texas, matched Edens, from Gatesville, Texas, and Motes, from Weatherford, Texas, with a 4.7-second run.
"We've been practicing hard and it's paying off right now," Tryan said. "We're just going to try to make a run like that every night."
With the second-round win, Jones moved into first place in the heeler world standings with $114,584.
"We have the same game plan every night," Jones said, "which is to make the smoothest run we can make 10 times."
In bull riding, Wesley Silcox of Payson, Utah, won with an 86.5 on Spin Dippin'. Standings leader and defending champion B.J. Schumacher of Hillsboro, Wis., finished second with an 86 on Red Rabbit. He increased his first-place total to $171,709.
Tie-down roping saw Stran Smith of Childress, Texas, place first with a time of :8.0.
The third of ten rounds will be contested today at the National Finals Rodeo.
