LINCOLN, Neb. - South Dakota State's magical run through independent status, through The Summit League and to the NCAA Tournament came to an end on Friday night in Lincoln, Neb., when the Jackrabbits ran into the defending national champion and second-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers in front of a packed house of 4,189 fans at the historic NU Coliseum.
The Huskers, who improved to 28-1 on the season with the win, advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament by the game scores of 30-13, 30-14, 30-13, and will face Wichita State in the second round today.
The Summit League champion Jackrabbits ended their season with a 25-11 record.
Senior Amy Anderson led the Jackrabbits with seven kills in 13 attempts with just one error for an impressive .462 hitting percentage. For the season, Anderson led the Jacks with a .362 hitting percentage.
A 2006 All-American second-team selection, Tracy Stalls led Nebraska with 11 kills, while the 2006 AVCA Player-of-the-Year, NCAA Tournament MVP and three-time All-American Sarah Pavan finished with 10 kills.
The tournament veteran Cornhuskers came out swinging in Game 1, jumping out to a 5-1 lead, but the Jackrabbits would battle their way back into the game with a 4-0 run that ended with the Jacks down only one point at 8-7.
Nebraska took control of the game after that, steadily pulling away for the 30-13 Game 1 win.
The Jacks took their first lead of the match on the first point of Game 2, and forced four early ties, but the champs broke a 6-all tie with a 7-0 run and never looked back.
Game 3 followed a similar pattern, thus ending the Jackrabbits magnificent season.
Friday's match not only marks the end of the season, but also the careers of Jackrabbit seniors Amy Anderson, Kristina Martin, Samantha Pearson and Mackenzie Osadchuk, but not before they made their marks in the SDSU record book.
Anderson leaves the program as the school's all-time leader in block assists with 422, and the single-season leader in block assists with 156 in 2007 (which broke her record of 133 in 2005).
She also holds the SDSU record for total blocks in a three and four-game match (both 10), along with The Summit League Tournament record 11 total blocks in a match and 21 total blocks in a tournament.
Anderson also ranks 11th on the SDSU all-time kills list with 1,195.
Martin's playing career ends with an SDSU best 1,765 kills to go along with her record 33 kills in a four-game match and record 36 kills in a five-game match. Martin also leaves as just the fifth player in South Dakota State history to record at least 1,000 kills (1,765) and 1,000 digs (1,074).
