RAPID CITY - A few of the riders at Saturday's season finale of the Black Hills Arena Racing Indoor Winter Series motocross need to do a little more than just show up to clinch their 2007-08 season point championships.
For others, however, it's nail-biting time.
Eleven of the 21 competition classes show a separation of 10 points or less between first and second going into the seventh, and final, race of the series.
The little guys on the small bikes will start the night with some of the tightest point races.
In the Pee Wee (age 7-8) class, Joe Poeppel leads Reese Kelley by a single point.
Kelley also trails Hunter Woodard by seven markers in the Pee Wee Open division.
In Pee Wee (4-6), Brayden Bruce has a five-point margin over Parker Seeley.
Other hotly-contested races include the Open C class, where Tyler Loomis maintains a scant two-point edge over Rick Keck, and Mini Non-Comp (10-12) with Dominic Poeppel leading Trey Duvall, 123-120.
The kicker for the final night is the fact that the points available are doubled.
The winner of the main event will earn 50 points instead of the usual maximum of 25.
That puts most of the classes up for grabs.
"But lots could change if someone that was leading doesn't show up," said Penny Ladner, Spearfish, who co-organizes the series with husband Mike Ladner, a longtime motocross rider. "At this race if they win they will be six points up from second place. Normally it is three points, but with double points, it could make the difference."
Participation in the series hasn't suffered because of current economic worries, including record high gasoline prices.
"We average 420 per race for riders," said Penny Ladner.
"I think that people are still traveling because it is a family sport," she said. "They get to see friends and it is sort of a mini-vacation for everyone."
Many of the indoor series riders will head outdoors for the start of the South Dakota Motocross Association season on April 19-20 in Pierre.
Qualifying heats for the Winter Indoor Series finals are scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. at the Pennington County Events Center Arena at the Central States Fairgrounds.
Main events to decide the final points titles in all classes, begin at 6:30 p.m.
