CHEYENNE, Wyo. - The top four positions in the first round of bareback riding changed Wednesday during the fifth performance of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo.
There is now a tie for first place with 87 points. Reigning world champion Bobby Mote rode Universal Rodeo's Hobnob and local talent Tyrel Nelson got on Captain Hook owned by the same company. Nelson is from Cheyenne and Mote is from Redmond, Ore.
They were followed by former National Intercollegiate Champion Ryan Gray, who lives in Cheney, Wash. Gray has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo three times and is looking for a fourth. He rode Jim Kenney's horse named Billie for 83 points. He was followed by College National Finals Rodeo qualifier Logan Hodson, from Telkwa, British Columbia, with an 82.
The leaderboard in saddle bronc riding saw several changes as well. Justin Arnold, of Santa Margarita, is the new leader after an 84-point ride on Salt River Rodeo's Anchors Away. Now in second place is Heath DeMoss, from Crowville, La., with an 83. There is a three-way tie for third place. Rod Hay, from Wildwood, Alberta, and Jesse Kruse, from Great Falls, Mont., got 81 point scores on Wednesday. They are joined by Louie Brunson from, Interior.
In the bull riding, J.W. Harris, from May, Texas, had the high score of the day at 86. He was one of 10 bull riders that were successful. This is the highest riding percentage seen so far with a total of 30 riders in the performance.
All of today's rough stock competitors will have their second ride here on Thursday. A rainstorm in the middle of the rodeo kept timed event competitors from having much success here on Thursday. Veteran tie-down roper Tommy Smith, from Hobbs, N.M., had the fastest time of the day at 15.3 seconds. While it isn't ranking in the second round, combined with his first round effort, he is now in third place over all with a total of 31.5 on two head.
Today's competition will feature the second round of competition and starts at 1 p.m.
