MITCHELL - The Rapid City Central girls tennis team got its season under way splitting a pair of matches on the road in Mitchell Tuesday afternoon.
The Cobblers opened the day with a 6-3 loss to the Kernals, but bounced back with a 6-3 win over Vermillion.
"We were excited to get a match under our belt," said Rapid City Central head coach Doug Lecy. "Everyone moved up from last year."
In singles competition, the Cobblers' Hallie Sims and Rochelle Flinn both defeated their opponents from Mitchell by identical 10-7 scores. Claire Porter won the only other match for Rapid City Central by downing Mitchell's Whitney Paul, 10-3.
Sims and Porter continued their success in doubles play with 10-0 wins against Shannon Skillman and Amanda Jacobson of Vermillion.
In No. 4 singles, the Tanagers' Lindsey Robinet narrowly escaped with an 11-9 victory over Central's Kelsey Smith.
The team of Skillman and Jones defeated Sims and Smith, 10-4, in No. 1 doubles, but Rapid City Central tallied wins in the other two doubles matches to pull out their first win of the young season.
Rapid City Central (1-1) hosts Brandon Valley at noon on Friday at Memorial Courts. The Rapid City Invitational gets under way later that day.
