STURGIS - Dustin Wisener pitched Spearfish to a 4-3 American Legion baseball victory over Sturgis at Strong Field on Friday night.
The right-hander hurled all nine innings and scattered five hits. He walked four batters and struck out three.
Spearfish (6-10 overall) took the lead for good in the eighth on Ryan Royer's two-out single. Jess Cooper and Wisener dashed home to put Post 164 ahead 4-3.
Wisener faced the minimum six batters the rest of the way, inducing four groundouts and a fly out. One of those groundouts resulted in a double play to end the eighth inning.
Spearfish struck first in the fourth inning when Wisener lofted a sacrifice fly to deep center field. Jordan Johnson trotted home for the 1-0 edge.
Alan McMillin plated Sturgis' equalizer in the fifth on Eli Bueno's single. McMillin was on third base when the two-out hit was struck.
Wisener put Spearfish ahead 2-1 in the sixth when he came home on Royer's RBI single.
Sturgis, which had its record fall to 4-5, loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth. Seth Lange scored on a bases-loaded walk to pull the Titans into a 2-2 tie.
A lineout and fielder's choice kept the bases loaded with two outs. The next batter, Bryan Cooley, drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Kasidy Huffman and give Sturgis a 3-2 edge.
Wisener's two-run, one-hit effort complemented his pitching performance. Royer laced two of Spearfish's hits.
Casey Hanzlik, the second of two Sturgis pitchers, was tagged with the loss. Lange scored one run and added a hit. Andy Jones contributed two hits.
"Dustin pitched one heck of a game," Spearfish manager Matt Kemp said. He added the squad survived four errors, and Wisener excelled in throwing first-pitch strikes.
"We are starting to jell," Kemp said. "You can tell that by looking at the kids. We also had timely hitting tonight."
Sturgis manager Nic Ewing said the game was clean and very well-played. He added the pitchers set the tone for the contest, which ended with the sides combining for only 11 hits.
Ewing praised Wisener's effort and added, "He worked fast. He worked off his fastball. There wasn't a lot of trickery. He made it work all game."
