Parker Sullivan hits bases-loaded single to give Post 22 the win.
RAPID CITY - Parker Sullivan's bases-loaded RBI single to center in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Rapid City Post 22 a come-from-behind 4-3 win over St. Louis Anheuser Busch Post 299 in the last game of the day at the Marshall Tubbs Classic at Fitzgerald Stadium on Thursday night.
Sullivan's big hit made a winner of Alex Niemann, who pitched nearly flawless ball in his three innings of relief work.
Niemann is a redshirt relief pitcher at South Dakota State University.
"I am always throwing in the bullpen," Niemann said. "I love coming in with the game on the line." Niemann is 6-0 on the year with five of those wins coming in relief.
Niemann gave up a single to the first batter he faced in the fifth inning before retiring the next six batters in a row.
He hit a batter to lead off the seventh before striking out the next two batters and coaxing a fly out.
The two teams not only looked alike on the field as they both played in all white uniforms, they played errorless ball and battled each other from the opening pitch.
St. Louis took a 2-0 lead in the third inning as Ryne Moleski had an RBI single and Nick Boeser added an RBI double.
After the home team scored a run in the third St. Louis took advantage of four walks issued by Post 22 starter Sam Wolff to take a 3-1 lead.
"Sam kept it close for us," said Post 22 head coach Dave Ploof. "He got a little out of sync in the fourth, but was able to get out of any further trouble."
Post 22 was held off the scoreboard in the fourth despite getting three hits.
Justin Sawyer doubled to lead off the inning but was thrown out at the plate by Mike Anderson on J.J. Martin's single to right field.
Martin was promptly picked off of first only to have Jordan Metter stroke a solid single.
The home team finally got to St. Louis starter Tom Belgeri by scratching together single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game.
In the fourth, Blaine Linster singled home Garrett Wolff who tripled. In the fifth, Nick Tolsma came around to touch home after leading off with a bunt single. Travis Sime plated Tolsma with a perfectly placed single to center.
Linster's second single of the game led off Post's seventh inning.
Niemann then reached on a fielder's choice. Tolsma sacrificed both runners up a base as St. Louis intentionally walked J.J. Martin.
Following an out on a failed suicide bunt attempt, Sullivan lined Rapid City's 11th hit of the game right up the middle to end it.
"I didn't get down when the count was 0-2," Sullivan said. "I saw the outfield shift and he put it right down the middle," said the 16 year-old who was playing third base with Sam Wolff pitching.
"It was an exciting ball game," Ploof said. "Both teams really battled. Niemann came in and shut the door for us and Sullivan turned it loose at the plate."
On an even sweeter note. Alex's dad, Paul, celebrated his birthday.
"It was a great birthday present for sure," said the elder Niemann, who was presented a cake after the game.
Play resumes today at 9:30 a.m. with the Post 22 Split Squad taking on the Billings Royals in a makeup game from Thursday. The Splitters will then play Spearfish at noon.
Aberdeen and Casper play at 2:30 p.m. with St. Louis and Colorado Springs playing in the 5 p.m. game.
Post 22 will close out the day against Billings at 7:30 p.m.
