RAPID CITY - Rapid City Post 22 pitcher Kolton Emery improved his record to 4-0 on the season, and received some timely hits from his Post 22 teammates in a 4-1 victory at Fitzgerald Stadium Saturday night.
The game was tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning in what was a quality pitching duel between Emery and Billings pitcher Riley Corecoran. Emery struck out eight and was perfect for 3-2/3 innings, painting the outside corner with his fastball and working quickly as he stiffened Billings' hitters. But Emery was matched the entire game by Corecoran, who had Post 22 hitters off-balance by using both a slow curveball and slider.
Billings tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning after they strung together three consecutive singles to load the bases for a potentially big inning. However, in what turned out to be a key out in the game, Billings failed to capitalize when Emery painted the outside corner twice, and then blew a high fastball by Tyson Shriver to thwart the threat and leave the game tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the sixth.
Post 22 then capitalized in the bottom of the inning when Sam Wolff - who went 2-for-3 on the night and extended his hitting streak to eight games - and drove a long line drive over the center fielders head to the wall for a lead-off double. Jarret Jensen then moved Wolff to third with a ground ball to the right side of the infield.J.J. Martin then hit a soft blooper to right singling home Wolff to take the lead, 2-1.
"We had good timely hitting tonight," Post 22 head coach Dave Ploof said.
"It was a good, fast ballgame to play and to watch."
Post 22 added two more runs in the sixth when Brock Estes - who also went 2-for-3- hit an RBI single - and Dana Hill singled home Estes, making the final score 4-1.
"That last inning I told the guys that Kolton was coming out, so they had to go out and get the win for him and they did." Ploof said.
With the win, Post 22 improves to 8-1 on the season and Billings drops to 10-7. The two teams will battle again at 10 a.m. today at Fitzgerald Stadium.
