Black Hills State nearly snapped the Dickinson State volleyball team's Dakota Athletic Conference regular-season win streak last season on its home court in Spearfish.

On Friday, the Yellow Jackets finally got the win they were looking for.

BHSU swept the Blue Hawks 25-14, 25-17, 25-18 at Scott Gymnasium to snap DSU's 52-game streak that dated back to 2004 and extend its losing skid to nine games.

"From last year ending, that's all we worked on was coming up to this point and wanting to beat them," BHSU sophomore Maggie O'Neill said.

BHSU came out blazing and established its dominance from the get-go by pulling ahead early in both the first and second games.

Behind O'Neill and the Engle sisters, junior Kristin and sophomore Kalin, the Yellow Jackets controlled the net and put DSU on its heels.

The Engle sisters each had nine kills while O'Neill added six. Kristin Engle had seven assisted blocks.

Junior setter Mandy Brumfield, a Dickinson High School graduate, had 30 assists to go along with two kills, two blocks and an ace.

DSU's serve receive didn't help its cause much either. The Blue Hawks had 10 receiving errors in the match and had a .065 hitting percentage.

"They didn't really make too big of adjustments to us," DSU coach Ryan Platt said. "It was kind of us beating ourselves on serve receive. We just let them get a few runs here and there."

BHSU used a 6-1 run to establish an early lead in the first game and closed it out on a 5-0 tear.

The Yellow Jackets never went on a run of more than four points in the second game and allowed DSU to pull closer at the end of the game before Brumfield scored a tip kill to close it out.

"You've got to come in and play with confidence," BHSU coach Jhett Albers said. "We feel we have the talent. If we're healthy, we are the team to beat."

The Blue Hawks got out to an early lead in the third game before BHSU extinguished the spark.

Freshman Jennifer Hartman had five of her team-high eight kills in the game to help DSU establish a 12-10 lead.

"We finally just started playing as a team," Hartman said.

The Blue Hawks kept it close until Kalin Engle sparked a 7-1 run to put BHSU in the driver's seat.

DSU kept battling but the Yellow Jackets closed out the victory on a block by the Engle sisters.

For Albers, it was his first victory over the Blue Hawks in the nine seasons he has coached the Yellow Jackets, who improved to 9-5 overall.

"I don't remember ever beating them up here," Albers said. "I know we've taken some games, a game here a game there, but not a full match. So it's different, definitely."
