Cross country: BHSU places five in top 12

YANKTON - Black Hills State won the women's title and took third on the men's side during the Mount Marty College cross country invitational on Saturday.

The Lady Yellow Jackets compiled 59 team points to edge second-place Concordia University (61). BHSU is No. 16 in the NAIA rankings, while Concordia is No. 12 nationally and No. 1 in Region III. Northwestern College was third at 79.

No. 23 Dickinson State won the men's title with 54 points. Concordia (60) was second and the Yellow Jackets, ranked sixth nationally, were third at 106. South Dakota School of Mines (210) placed seventh.

Individually, Dordt College's Jen Kempers won the women's race in a time of 18 minutes, 15.59 seconds.

BHSU placed four women in the top-12. Wendy O'Lexey (18 minutes, 19.77 seconds) took third, Kerry Washburn (18:32.57) was sixth, Alica Verhulst (19:14.17) placed 10th and Shelli Scheffler (19:18.81) ended up in 12th.

The Lady Jackets' fifth runner, Katie Cook, placed 30th with a time of 20:05.39.

Mines had a couple of solid finishers. Kendra Crisman posted a time of 20:01.94 to place 28th, and Brittney Hovdenes finished 36th after a 20:19.37-clocking. Samantha Diede (21:57.57) and Jessie Chretien (23:20.59) were 84th and 118th, respectively.

For the men, Iowa Western Community College harrier David Barmasai won in a time of 24:58.57.

BHSU's Tyrone White, who is from Eagle Butte, placed 10th after posting a 26:04.21. Teammate Mark Mazza was 17th in a time of 26:30.92, while Mines' Rob Hahn (26:32.95) and Colton Reid (26:33.28) took 18th and 19th, respectively.

Yellow Jackets K.C. Fiedler (26:48.05), Neil Long (26:52.54) and Jon Antar (26:57.67) took 25th, 28th and 29th, respectively.

The Hardrockers' Kyle Kattke finished 39th in a time of 27:11.18. Lucas Fried (27:52.40) added a 63rd-place finish and Marcus Moor (28:44.77) was 103rd.

Black Hills State head coach Scott Walkinshaw was happy with the finish. He said he did not run his top-5 runners in the men's race.

"I was really pleased with the effort," Black Hills State coach Scott Walkinshaw said. "I was really surprised we finished as high as we did."

Walkinshaw added that the race conditions were ideal.

"We had a lot of personal bests and seasonal bests," he noted.

The Dakota Athletic Conference meet will be on Friday in Dickinson, N.D.
