RAPID CITY - Tryouts for the South Dakota ASA Regional All-Star team, which will play against the U.S. Olympic Team will be held Saturday in Rapid City.

The tryout will be held at the Parkview Softball Complex and will feature 25 players trying out from as far away as Salt Lake City and Saskatchewan, Canada.

"This will be the opportunity of a lifetime to compete against softball's elite," said Rick DenHerder, mateur Softball Association area commissioner. "Our goal is to bring together the best that South Dakota has to offer."

More than 50 players submitted applications to tryout for the South Dakota all-star team.

The first of two tryouts was May 17 in Sioux Falls at Sherman Park.

"We had a great turnout in Sioux Falls," said DenHerder. "The talent was top notch."

The game, which is July 15, will pit the 2008 USA Softball Women's National Team, featuring pitchers Jennie Finch, Lisa Fernandez and Cat Osterman, against a group of South Dakota regional all-stars. The game is one of 46 stops on the Bound 4 Beijing Pre-Olympic Tour for the Olympic women, who will head to Beijing in August to compete for their fourth straight gold medal.

The three-time Olympic Gold Medal stars have faced some of the top college programs in the country including perennial powerhouses Arizona, Tennessee, Oklahoma, UCLA, and Michigan. Team USA played the WPSL Washington Glory in front of a sold out record crowd of 8,724 fans on May 10.

In addition to the top college programs in the country, Team USA will face international competition when they take on the Canadian and Chinese National teams on June 7 and June 8 in Oklahoma City, home of USA/ASA Softball.

Tryouts begin at 12:30 p.m. and are open to the public.
