BROOKINGS - South Dakota State University football players Derek Domino and Kyle Harris have been honored by the Missouri Valley Football Conference for their performances in the nationally ranked Jackrabbits' 44-6 victory over Georgia Southern in Saturday's season opener.

Domino, a junior linebacker from Spring Lake Park, Minn., was named defensive player of the week after registering a game-high 11 tackles, including a sack and 1-1/2 tackles for loss. He also recovered a fumble to lead a relentless Jackrabbit defense that forced four turnovers, tallied nine sacks and limited GSU to 11 net yards rushing.

Harris, a sophomore kicker from Florissant, Mo., earned special teams player of the week honors after connecting on 3-of-4 field-goal tries and all five extra-point attempts. Harris took over all kicking duties during the week and responded by making field goals of 44, 37 and 40 yards, with his only miss coming from 46 yards. The field-goal attempts were the first of his career. He also recorded two touchbacks on kickoffs.

Northern Iowa quarterback Pat Grace was named offensive player of the week for the second consecutive week.

The Jackrabbits open conference play Saturday night, hosting Indiana State in the 43rd Annual Beef Bowl.

CARTER, GILLESPIE, SCHMIDT HONORED IN GREAT WEST CONFERENCE: UC Davis wide receiver Chris Carter had quite a season Saturday night in the Aggies' 17-10 loss to No. 4 Montana.

The 6-0 senior shattered the school record for most receptions in a game by three with 18 catches for 190 yards to earn Great West Offensive Player of the Week honors.

The Defensive Player of the Week award went to Cal Poly linebacker Carlton Gillespie, who had a sack and two other stops behind the line in the Mustangs' opening-game victory over Sacramento State, while UC Davis punter Colton Schmidt earned the weekly special teams honors by pinning Montana deep into its own end three times in four attempts.
