Basketball: Four area teams play on at NABI

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Four area basketball teams advanced to bracket play on Wednesday at the sixth annual Native American Basketball Invitational tournament in Phoenix.

The South Dakota BBall Divas, from Pine Ridge, advanced to a Thursday division playoff with e-LEMON-ators, from Shiprock, N.M., with a 100-18 win on Wednesday over Ak-Chin, of Maricopa, Ariz. The Divas finished pool play with a 2-1 record, earning a 12-seed in the bracket-style playoffs. The e-LEMON-ators are seeded No. 5.

Three area South Dakota boys teams moved on to the 24-team division play bracket on Wednesday.

Same Day Express II, from Porcupine, finished pool play with a 2-1 record. The Express II earned a No. 14 seed and were scheduled to face Klamath Nation, from Chiloquin, Ore., on Thursday in a first-round matchup. The Express II posted a 94-58 win over Hualapai Nation, of Peach Springs, Ariz., on Wednesday.

Two teams - Same Day Express I and Lakota Dakota - also advanced to bracket play and received first-round byes.

The Express I, from Porcupine, is scheduled to face either the Salt River Warriors or Kiowa Motion on Friday in a second-round contest.

Lakota/Dakota Sioux, from McLaughin, finished pool play with a perfect 3-0 record, following a 72-53 win over Perrysburg, N.Y., on Wednesday. The Sioux earned a first-round bye and were scheduled to face either White Swan or the Seminoles on Thursday.

The South Dakota teams were among 80 boys and girls teams that began play at the annual event. Started in 2003 with 24 boys and girls teams from Arizona, NABI has blossomed into an 80-team event with championship games. The NABI is the largest all native basketball tournament in North America, dedicated to serving Native American high school youth. It is the first Native American tournament to be certified by the NCAA and takes place annually in Phoenix.
