CUSTER - The undefeated and No. 3-ranked Belle Fourche Broncs could have been diagnosed with a case of football bipolar disorder Friday night. The Broncs defeated the Custer Wildcats by three touchdowns, 41-20, despite turning the ball over nine times.
"We made big plays on one hand, but we had way too many turnovers on the other," Belle Fourche head coach Adam Nowowiejski said. "I don't know what the problem was tonight. I thought we played bad tonight and still won."
Belle Fourche (7-0 overall, 4-0 BHC) wasted no time putting points on the board, scoring on their first drive of the game.
Francois Barnaud put the Broncs in great field position with a 33-yard punt return. From the Wildcats 37-yard line, it took Belle Fourche only one minute and five plays to put the ball in the end zone. The drive was capped by a 22-yard touchdown scamper by Cade Kling.
A Belle Fourche defense that has dominated all year again flew to the football Friday night, led by the interior lineman James Orwick, Tyler Teppo and linebacker Jake Lane. The defense didn't allow a Custer first down until late in the first quarter. All three players had 10 tackles for the Bronc defense.
Offensively, Belle Fourche quarterback Alex Kling threw four touchdown passes and rushed for another. Kling found wide receiver Jordan Boston twice in the end zone. The first was a 27-yard strike in which Kling threw back across his body to a diving Boston in the back of the end zone, giving the Broncs a 14-0 lead.
"Jordan Boston played a heck of a game for us tonight," Nowowiejski said. "He caught the ball extremely well and made great plays."
Custer's 20 points on offense were the most any team has scored against Belle Fourche all season, and they kept the game within striking distance in the first half. They went on a nine-play 58 yard scoring drive late in the first quarter, cutting the lead to seven points.
However, the Broncs pulled away due to big plays from their offense and special teams. Returner, Francois Barnaud had over 200 return yards in the game, several times returning punts and kick offs deep into Wildcat territory.
The short field allowed Alex Kling to hook up with Jake Walker on two third quarter touchdown passes, and a 34-7 lead at the end of the quarter.
Custer cut the lead late in the game, taking advantage of points off turnovers. Jake Roddy hit field goals from 40 and 30 yards. Luke Roddy threw a 26-yard touchdown to Darin Smith. Custer (3-4) finishes the season with Hill City on Thursday.
Belle Fourche added one last score when Alex Kling scampered for a 9-yard touchdown run with 4:52 left in the fourth quarter.
"The positives tonight were we had some big plays on special plays from Francois," Nowowiejski said. "Alex threw the ball well and the running backs ran hard, but moving forward we're going to have to cut down on turnovers if we're going to be successful."
Belle Fourche (7-0) faces off against St. Thomas More for the final game of the regular season on Thursday.
