FORT PIERRE - The newest Little Lady Charger of Sully Buttes was gifted with a boys' basketball thriller just hours after entering the world Tuesday.
Kristin Kinney, wife of Sully Buttes head boys coach Lee Kinney, gave birth to Scotland Marie at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre an hour or so before tip off of the Sully Buttes-Stanley County game across the river at Parkview Gym.
Under the direction of assistant coach, Jeremy Chicoine, the Chargers came from behind in a 57-56 nailbiter. Ironically, it was parents night in Fort Pierre.
Senior Spencer Yackley's free throw with less than three seconds left in regulation proved to be the game-winner. There were seven lead changes in the fourth quarter before Sully Buttes was able to claim the victory.
Stanley County led by as many as five points early in the fourth quarter, but the game quickly see-sawed. A basket by Trevor Lopour with just under two minutes to go gave the Buffs a 57-55 lead, and they regained possession on a steal by Trevor Nold. Sully Buttes tied the game with 40 seconds left on a jumper by Zach Merwin.
The Chargers got another shot to win the game when the Buffs turned the ball over with 11 seconds left. After a timeout, Caleb Kemink passed the ball inside to Yackley who was fouled. He missed the first foul shot but made the second.
It was another disappointing loss for the Buffs, who were playing their first home game in more than a month.
"It's tough to lose a game when you're leading most of the way," said Stanley County coach Don Shields. "We thought we got tapped a couple of times but those calls are going to be what they are. We played hard."
Sully Buttes got off to a quick start and led by as much as eight in the first quarter. But the Buffs had a big second quarter. Zach Alexander scored eight points in the last three minutes of the half to enable the home team to take a 33-26 lead into halftime.
Sully Buttes regrouped during the break and scored the first eight points of the third quarter to regain the lead. There were eight lead changes alone in the third quarter before the Buffs' Austin Iverson hit a three just before the buzzer for a 46-45 Stanley County lead.
Yackley led the winners with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Merwin added 13 points. Lopour led all scorers with 20 points to go with 10 rebounds. Iverson had 16 points and Alexander 11.
