SPEARFISH - Black Hills State built a 28-point lead and then held off a furious Montana State-Northern rally to beat the Northern Lights 90-78 in the Perkins Classic on Saturday night.
The Yellow Jackets led 67-39 after Corey Doolan drained a 3-point shot with 14:17 left in the game, and BHSU was still up by 24 points, 72-48, with nine minutes to play.
But the Northern Lights stormed back on the shoulders of super talented senior guard Delvaughn Tinned who tossed in 11 points the rest of the way. MSN sliced the Jackets' lead to 80-69 with 3:21 on the clock, but Black Hills then sank 10-of-11 free throws to wrap up the win.
"We got up big, but then lost our intensity," BHSC coach Paul Sather said.
Tinned topped the Northern Lights in scoring with 30 points, 17 after halftime.
"He's the best player we've seen all season," Sather said. "Tinned can hit the 3s, make floaters and also get to the rim."
"Give Montana State-Northern and coach Shawn Huse a lot of credit. They suited only eight players, but they came back at us strong. They never quit."
BHSU got solid performances from many players.
"We've got a lot of guys capable of stepping up and having big games at the offensive end," Sather said.
On Saturday night, it was Randy Herman's turn to shine. The 6-foot-7 Belle Fourche junior knocked down 8-of-12 shots (5-of-8 from 3-point range) and finished with 23 points.
"Randy has been concentrating on improving his rebounding and defense, and at times his offense has suffered, but he did a great job shooting the ball tonight," Sather said.
Black Hills put four other players in double-figures. Luke Enos and Doolan each dropped in a dozen points, and Will John Johnson and Cain Atkinson each added 11.
The Jackets got 36 points and 11 assists from their reserves.
Parfait Naygihugu, injured for most of the season, came off the bench to give BHSU a huge lift in the first half.
The Jackets trailed 13-9 at the 12:30 mark of the opening period. Naygihugu sank a 3-pointer, a short baseline shot, and a drive into the paint to put Black Hills up 21-18. BHSU poured in 43 points in the final 13 minutes of the half to go into then locker room with a 52-33 edge.
"We started the game a little sluggish, but Parfait got us rolling. It's good to have him back," Sather said.
For the second straight night, the Jackets played long-ball, sinking 14-of-28 3-point attempts, giving them 25-of-48 for the weekend, 52 percent.
Both teams finished with 32 rebounds with Johnson grabbing nine for Black Hills. MSN grabbed nine offensive rebounds in the opening half but just two after the break. BHSU's Forrest Dorr and Spencer Childress each tossed out eight assists.
Sather credited assistant coach Brad Schafer with "doing a great job getting us ready for Montana State. Brad called from the sideline everything they ran at us."
