Boys basketball: Crusaders set school record

ST. FRANCIS - Eight players scored in double figures as 13 of 14 players scored as Red Cloud made history on Monday in a 129-43 defeat of St. Francis in high school boys basketball.

This was the highest point total ever scored in Red Cloud history. The total ties Red Cloud with Crow Creek for the fourth highest total in Class A history. St. Francis holds the No. 1 spot with 144 points.

Billy Scott scored 19 points to pace the Crusaders. Christian McGhee scored three 3s en route to 15 points. Art Vitalis netted 13 and Mike Twiss scored 12. Carl Swallow and Mike Cuny added 11 points apiece while Jeremy Blacksmith and Wade O'Bryan scored 10 points each.

Richard Spotted Tail led all scorers with a game-high 21 points for the Warriors.

The Crusaders finished the night 57 percent from the field, while St. Francis shot 42 percent. Red Cloud dominated rebounding, 53-18.

St. Francis (3-15) travels to McLaughlin and Red Cloud (18-1) hosts Hill City on Friday.

Winner 71, Miller 63

WINNER - Zach Horstman dropped in 30 points as Winner defeated Miller Area 71-63 in a boys basketball game on Monday night.

The Warriors took a 23-12 after the first quarter and made it hold up the rest of the way.

"We got off to a good start offensively," said Winner head coach Jim Drake. "This was the first game we scored in the 70s in regulation all year. It's a big win heading into district play next week."

Seth Daughters added a double-double for Winner with 11 points and 11 rebounds while Ryan Kindt added 16 markers for the winners.

Taylor Carr scored 12 points and Dan Hall added 10 for the Rustlers.

Miller (11-8) will travel to Highmore on Friday and Winner (12-8) begins District 13A on Feb. 26.

Newell 60, Hot Springs 57

HOT SPRINGS - Freshman Patrick Gatzke made the difference in the second half as Newell surpassed Black Hills Conference opponent Hot Springs 60-57 in boys basketball action.

"Patrick Gatzke was the key to their fourth quarter surge; we couldn't stop him," Hot Springs head coach Kim Henningsen. "They (Newell) made some shots and key free throws in the fourth."

Newell led throughout the first half including carrying a 28-22 lead at halftime. Hot Springs battled back to tie the game at 42-all after three.

Newell's Tyler Mutchler lit up the board from long distance. The 6-foot-6 junior drained five 3-pointers and finished the night with a game-high 21 points. Gatzke tallied 19 points and Sterling Boylan added 10.

Even with the loss, Hot Springs finished with three players in double figures. Jay Miles paced the team with 18 points; Eamon Entwisle scored 15 and Blake McPherson added 12. Entwisle and Miles each netted three 3s.

"We shot as well in the second half as we've shot all year, but didn't do well in the first half," Henningsen said.

Both teams open their respective district action on Monday. Hot Springs, 3-17, travels to Red Cloud for District 15B action. Newell, 9-11, takes on St. Thomas More in the opening round of the District 16A tournament.

Lyman 69, Bennett County 38

PRESHO - Four players netted double figures as Lyman defeated Western Great Plains foe Bennett County 69-38 in boys basketball action.

The Raiders wasted no time taking a 17-4 lead which they extended to 37-11 at the half.

David Schindler led all scorers with 22 points. Leeland O'Dell added 17 points and Tyler Ollerich chipped in with 11. Shae McClanahan scored 10.

Lyman held a decisive

49-37 rebounding advantage. Ollerich, O'Dell and Zane Abrahamson each grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

Orin Three Stars paced the Warriors with 12 points.

Lyman, 13-6, awaits the start of District 11A action on Feb. 26. Bennett County, 6-13, wraps up the season with Little Wound on Friday.

Kadoka Area 60, Sturgis JV 47

STURGIS - Kadoka Area spilled the Sturgis junior varsity on Monday night 60-47 as three Kougars hit for double figures.

Royal Addison and Bryer Jones scored 15 points apiece while Chris Byrd added 13 for Kadoka Area.

The Kougars broke a 10-10 tie by outscoring the Scoopers

21-11 in the second quarter.

Joey Olson's 12 points led Sturgis with Dillon Srong and Labin Clement adding nine each.

Both teams will close out their regular seasons this week as Kadoka Area (15-4) visits Philip on Friday and the Sturgis JV will take on the Douglas JV tonight.
