BRANDON - Brandon Valley got off to a quick start and beat Spearfish, 42-21, in a Class 11AA high school football playoff game Tuesday.
Jordan Johnson led the 12th-seeded Spartans with 117 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries in the losing effort. He finished the season with 1,343 yards and 16 touchdowns on 274
carries.
The host Lynx scored 13 points in the first quarter and 22 in the second to open up a 35-0 halftime lead.
Eric Hanson caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Austin Sumner and Brit Wickett added a 5-yard run in the first quarter.
Michael Bellmore got the second quarter going with a scoring run covering four yards, before Simon scored on a 2-yard run and then caught a 4-yard pass from Sumner to end the half.
The Spartans scored back-to-back touchdowns in the third quarter - Dustin Wiesner had a 13-yard run and Johnson added a 7-yard scamper - to make it a 35-14 game after three.
Bellmore came back with a 1-yard scoring run in the fourth, before Wiesner found paydirt again from seven yards out to wrap up the game's scoring.
"(We) came out right away and had a good first half," Brandon Valley head coach Chad Garow said.
"The second half was ugly."
Bellmore rushed the ball 17 times for 99 yards, and Wickett added 32 yards on four carries. Sumner went 8-for-13 for 110 yards through the air.
Wiesner added 82 rushing yards on 11 attempts for the Spartans.
Spearfish finished the season with a 3-7 record. Fifth-seeded Brandon Valley (8-2) travels to Sioux Falls Roosevelt for a quarterfinal game Monday.
