Deadwood - Stanley County secured a berth in the class 11B football playoffs, blanking Lead-Deadwood 39-0 in the Golddiggers' home finale on Friday evening at Ferguson Field.
The win improved the Fort Pierre-based Buffaloes to 4-3 overall.
The visitors rushed for 251 yards, led by 159 yards and a pair of touchdown runs by senior back Austin Iversen.
"On the 3 1/2 hour bus trip here, we wanted every kid to play 100 percent for every second," said Stanley County coach Tom Rogers.
"We got our passing game going." Josh Rogers, son of coach Rogers, threw for 102 yards. All four of Rogers' completed passes went to Kyle Tibbetts.
The Buffaloes stampeded into the scoring column on a 29-yard run by Iversen with 6:45 remaining in the first period. The drive began on an intercepted pass.
Later in the quarter, Jake Pearson found the end zone on a four-yard scoring run.
Pearson added another TD run from two yards out in the early seconds of the second quarter. A conversion run by Josh Rogers upped the Buffaloes' lead to 22-0.
"Tonight we were able to run our guys on passing routes," said coach Rogers. "It loosened them (Diggers) up, and allowed us to get our running game working."
A 21-yard touchdown pass from Rogers to Tibbets and PAT kick by Keenan Cornelison handed Stanley County a 29-0 halftime advantage.
Stanley County added to its scoring in the third quarter on a 38-yard field goal and 24-yard TD run.
Lead-Deadwood rushed for 67 yards in the game. Justin Rogers accumulated 26 yards on the ground. Tanner Adler added 19 yards in two rushes.
"Our linebackers did a great job. Our defensive ends did a tremendous job," said coach Rogers. "We did a great job of getting penetration. We knew Adler was a dangerous weapon. We told our defensive backs to not let Adler get behind them."
"This is not the way we wanted to end up. We wanted to send the seniors out with a win in their final home game," said Lead-Deadwood coach Tony Biesiot.
In spite of the loss, Lead-Deadwood (1-7 overall) has a chance to bump a fourth seed in another Region out of the playoffs. "I'm 90 percent sure we'll knock Canton out of the playoffs," said Biesiot. Should the Diggers make the playoffs, they would likely travel to Harrisburg in a rematch of last year's first round of the class 11A playoffs.
