RAPID CITY - Valley City State got off to a fast start and racked up 701 total yards of offense in a 34-3 win over South Dakota School of Mines in a Dakota Athletic Conference college football game Saturday afternoon at Dunham Field at O'Harra Stadium.
VCSU quarterback Jason Beilke completed his first nine pass attempts for 226 yards, as the Vikings opened up a 27-0 lead early in the second quarter.
On the first drive of the game, Beilke completed four passes for 44 yards to set up Anthony Walkine's 34-yard TD run, which gave the visitors a 6-0 lead 3 minutes, 6 seconds into the contest.
After a three-and-out by Mines, Hardrocker punter Joe Sanchez pinned the Vikings on their own 2-yard-line with a 58-yard boot. But, that did not seem to bother Beilke, who found Chauncey Calhoun for a 98-yard TD pass on the next play from scrimmage to make it 12-0 at the 10:05-mark.
"Their quarterback had a real good game," Mines head coach Dan Kratzer said. "And, of course, the thing that probably hurt us as much as anything was the (98-yard) touchdown pass. We had them backed up, it's (6-0) - we're not worried about (6-0).
"We feel comfortable with what we're doing. But now, all of a sudden, one play later it's (12-0)."
Walkine found paydirt from two yards out with 6:34 left in the opening quarter, making the score 19-0. He later presented VCSU with a 27-0 lead after scoring on a two-yard run and then catching a pass on the two-point conversion with 14:56 remaining in the second.
Valley City State head coach Dennis McCulloch was happy about the fast start.
"In my 14 years here, when we come out to Tech, it has been a close game, it's been a struggle," he said, "Today, we just got off to a good start, and I think it just helped our attitude and probably lifted some weight off our shoulders.
"We haven't been playing great football this year, and I think we probably put our best game together all the way around today."
Rapid City native Justin Whalin kicked a 28-yard field goal with 5:17 to go in the third for the Rockers' lone points of the day.
Beilke found Calhoun for a 25-yard TD pass about 3-1/2 minutes later to close out the game's scoring.
"Two things really killed us," Kratzer added. "Obviously we didn't get a quick start on offense, but we were down after eight plays (19-0). There goes the game plan, there goes all the things that you know are going to be effective.
"So, you go to plan two, which you hate to always have to go to. Again, we're not a strong enough football team to overcome that kind of adversity. (Valley City) came out with a nice game plan, and attacked our secondary and just whipped us."
Walkine rushed the ball 29 times for 172 yards, Beilke went 20-for-30 for 425 passing yards, Calhoun caught six passes for 178 yards and Brandon Siverson added 100 receiving yards on eight receptions.
Luke Munsell accounted for 129 of Mines' 194 yards of offense. He had 114 rushing yards on 21 attempts and also recorded one reception for 15 yards.
Tom Lunzman had 14 total tackles and Tyrell Anderson added 13 for the 'Rockers. Chad Westerdorff had an interception, while Everett Brill and Kayne Ree each recovered a fumble.
Mines (3-6, 1-5 DAC) closes out the regular season at Mayville State and Valley City State (3-5, 3-3) hosts Black Hills State on Saturday.
