MITCHELL - Three girls golfers at the state Class AA tournament were each coming off consecutive top-five finishes the past two years. Two of them actually cracked the top five in each of the past three years.
That select group didn't include Pierre's Taylor Smalley. In fact, Smalley had never finished higher than sixth.
But in the second and final round Tuesday at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell, that didn't prevent Smalley from taking the field by storm, eventually pulling away from Brookings' Morgan Fitts and Rapid City Stevens' Paige Osterloo to win by four strokes.
Brookings won the team title with a 654; Sioux Falls O'Gorman was a distant second at 677 and Huron was third with a 689.
Smalley entered the day in a three- way tie for first with Fitts and Osterloo after a 79 on the first day. But on Tuesday, the junior from Pierre used a 35 on the front nine - including birdies on three of the first four holes - to pull away, eventually finishing with a second-round 74 and a two-day total of 153.
"That was probably the most important part, to come out really strong," Smalley said. "But it's all important to finish strong, and that's what I did. I'm pretty happy about that."
Fitts and Osterloo both ended up with 157s, though Fitts beat Osterloo on the first hole in a playoff for second place.
"I'm sure she is (disappointed)," Stevens coach Phil Hunt said. "She had kind of a tough three holes. All four of the kids in that group are very talented. … Taylor Smalley is a great athlete and a great golfer. She really improved."
Chelsea Cadwell of Sioux Falls Washington, who finished second each of the last two years, rebounded from a disappointing 84 on Day 1 to tie for fourth with Watertown's Kali Gottsleben at 162.
The title for Brookings is the team's fourth straight. The Bobcats held a surprisingly slim three-stroke lead over Huron after Day 1, but pulled away from the field on Tuesday.
"I really thought we'd have about a 10-shot lead going into the second day," Brookings coach Bill Scholten said. "Huron kind of creeped up on us and played exceptional. I knew we could play better, and I'll tell you, we really played well (Tuesday)."
The Bobcats were led by Fitts, who moved up a spot from last year's third-place finish, but Brookings also had three girls in the top eight as the team posted a season-best round of 318 on Tuesday. Ashley Hendricks was sixth with a 163 and Megan Selberg was eighth with a 165.
"That was definitely our lowest score of the year," Scholten said. "We really never put it all together all year, and now we did on the last day of the state tournament, so you can't ask for anything better than that."
Sioux Falls O'Gorman took 15 strokes off its day one score to post a 331 on Tuesday and finish in second. Huron ended up shooting a 350 on Day 2 to fall to third with a 689.
Rapid City Stevens finished in fourth place, down from third a year ago, but the Raiders score of 696 was better than last year's. Hunt said considering the turnover his team had in athletes this year, it did all right.
"We're coming off a season when we lost three seniors," Hunt said. "We had three players new to the team. I think they performed very well."
Katelyn Belzer was Stevens' second-best finisher. She was 16th with a 173. Erin Cheever was 27th with a 182, Molly Rezich and Molly Webster were 35th with 189s and Kate Knigge had a 219.
Sturgis' Megan McDougall finished tied for 13th with a 170 and Brianna Dodge was tied for 27th with a 182. Spearfish's top finisher was Hayley Decker in 38th place with a 191.
Rapid City Central did not have enough golfers to accumulate a team score. The Cobblers' top finisher was Taylor Warren in 75th place with a 217.
