Hot Springs golfers get win at own triangular

HOT SPRINGS - Custer's Casey Whitney took medalist honors and host team Hot Springs took the team title at the Hot Springs Triangular Friday afternoon at the Southern Hills Golf Course.

Whitney shot a 77 on the day, edging Hot Springs' P.J. Wetzel by one stroke, while the Bison golf team finished with a score of 335.

"It was a cool day with good conditions and the course was in good shape," said Hot Springs head coach Dave Merrill. "I thought someone would shoot par or less, but all these golfers are pretty close."

Custer finished second with a 338 and St. Thomas More/Rapid City Christian shot a 365.

Joe Drew shot an 81 for the low score on the Cavalier team.

Custer and St. Thomas More/Rapid City Christian participates in the Douglas Quadrangular on Thursday, while Hot Springs will tee off with with Rapid City Stevens at Meadowbrook on

Sept. 9.

College Volleyball

Chadron wins two at Colorado Mines tournament

GOLDEN, Colo. - Chadron State opened the season with a pair of wins at the Colorado School of Mines' 2008 Days Inn Golden Oredigger Volleyball Classic on Friday.

Daniella Oliviera recorded 22 kills as the Eagles defeated Winona State in five games with scores of 25-14, 25-22, 16-25, 17-25, 15-12.

Thais Batistella and Oliviera combined for 47-of-60 kills as Chadron powered past Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania 27-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-18.

Sarah Mortensen's defensive effort resulted in a team-high 18 digs. Batistella added 16 digs and Oliviera finished the game with 12.

Chadron, 2-0 overall, continues play today with Wisconsin-Parkside at 1 p.m. The Eagles conclude the tournament with Minnesota State University at 7:30 p.m.

Black Hills State drops first two matches of season

ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Black Hills State University lost two matches of the Red Raider Classic at Northwestern College on Friday.

Doane College downed the Yellow Jackets 18-25, 25-13, 23-25 and 25-14 in the opening round.

Northwestern College defeated Black Hills State in straight sets, 25-13, 25-13, 25-16.

Action continues today as BHSU (0-2) takes on Concordia at noon, MT. The Yellow Jackets finish the day with Dordt College at 4 p.m.

Rapid City Central girls win a pair of duals

RAPID CITY - The Rapid City Central girls tennis team won two duals on Friday at Memorial Park, 5-4 over Campbell County (Wyo.) and 8-1 over Brandon Valley.

Hallie Sims and Rochelle Flynn were undefeated in both singles and doubles play on the day.

The Cobblers moved to 3-1 in dual match play on the season with the win. They continue play in the Rapid City Open today.
