Basketball roundup: Bennett County escapes with win

KADOKA - Bennett County, the No. 4-ranked team in Class A, escaped with a 49-48 win over state Class B No. 5 Kadoka Area in a girls basketball matchup on Thursday.

The Lady Warriors led 27-22 at intermission, but the Kougars came back and outscored Bennett County 18-9 to take the lead 40-36 at the end of three quarters.

Bennett County regained the lead in the fourth quarter by outscoring Kadoka Area 13-8 and held on for the win when the Kougars made a 2-point field goal as time expired.

Keely Krolikowski paced Bennett County with 21 points, and Amy O'Neill added 10 points.

Kadoka Area was led by Maria Herber's 14 points. Sammi Berry chipped in 11 points and Shannon VanderMay added 10 points.

Bennett County (17-1) travels to New Underwood tonight, and Kadoka Area (13-4) plays Willow Lake on Saturday in Huron at the East/West Shoot-out.

Winner 51, Platte-Geddes 46

WINNER - Strong defense in the final quarter made the difference for Winner as the Warriors claimed a 51-46 victory over Platte-Geddes.

"We couldn't get going on offense. We really struggled and missed shots. Platte played good defense," Winner head coach Derris Buus said.

"We scraped it out and pulled it out in the end. Defending was the difference in the fourth quarter."

Winner trailed 30-27 at halftime and 40-39 heading into the final stanza. The Warriors took the lead at the start of the fourth and battled with the Black Panthers for control, finally pulling away in the final minutes.

Eight players scored in the win. Megan Phillips paced Winner with 15 points. Sharee Galbraith added 13.

Teri VerSteeg and Elli Mushitz paced Platte-Geddes with 12 points each.

Winner (14-4) hosts McLaughlin tonight.

Sully Buttes 65, Selby Area 24

ONIDA - Kylee Lamb recorded a double-double as No. 3-ranked Sully Buttes earned a 65-24 girls basketball victory over Selby Area.

The Chargers didn't waste time, but took a 27-9 lead after the first quarter and led 40-19 at halftime. Sully Buttes gave up only one point in the third quarter.

Kylee Lamb scored a game-high 19 points and paced the Chargers with 10 rebounds. Elizabeth Lamb scored 17 points and Alexis Yackley netted 10.

Ashley Schlomer paced Selby Area (4-10 overall) with 10 points.

Sully Buttes moves to 18-1 overall. The Chargers travel to Faulkton on Feb. 15 for their final regular season game.

BOYS GAMES

South Central 64, Andes Central 50

BURKE - South Central had three players in double figures as the Cougars beat Andes Central 64-50 in a boys basketball matchup.

Andes Central led 14-9 after the first, but South Central took a 26-22 halftime lead and never looked back. The Cougars also held a 41-26 rebounding advantage.

Andrew Tuttle scored a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Marcus Warnke contributed 18 points in the win, and Luke Tuttle netted 13.

Ryan Knudsen paced Andes Central with 16 points and Joey McKeegan added 15.

South Central (4-14) travels to White Lake on Monday.

Cheyenne-Eagle Butte 59, McLaughlin 52

McLAUGHLIN - Three players scored in double figures as Cheyenne-Eagle Butte won a back-and-forth battle over McLaughlin 59-52.

The Midgets jumped to a 21-8 first quarter lead, but found themselves behind 26-25 at halftime. McLaughlin led 43-39 after three, but the Braves outshot the home team 20-9 in the final stanza for the win.

Tri Voun Buffalo paced the Braves with 14 points. Sam Mendoza and Myles Frazier netted 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Julian Defender led all scorers with 16 points for the Midgets. Vance Taken Alive scored 13 points.

McLaughlin (6-9) travels to Winner tonight. Cheyenne-Eagle Butte (9-6) travels to Fort Yates to face Standing Rock, N.D. on Tuesday.

Standing Rock, N.D. 75, Mobridge 73

MOBRIDGE - Four Players scored in double figures as Standing Rock, N.D., edged Mobridge 75-73 Thursday night.

The North Dakota team led 21-12 after the first quarter, but the Tigers came back to tie the game at 40 at halftime.

Tracy Irving, Kyle Claymore and Christian Iron Shield all had 16 points each to lead the Warriors, followed by Kent Grey Cloud with 11 points.

Kyle Chase and Skyler Frederick both finished with 18 points, while Brett Kuehl chipped in 17 points for the Tigers.

Mobridge (4-11) meet Stanley County tonight in Ft. Pierre.
