SIOUX FALLS - Sioux Falls Roosevelt ended Rapid City Stevens' season with a 63-9 victory in the opening round of the Class 11AA playoffs Tuesday at sunny, windy Howard Wood Field.
Fourth-seeded Roosevelt needed 12 minutes, 34 seconds to notch six touchdowns. The Rough Riders wound up with 54 points in the first half while equaling its most lopsided margin of victory this season.
"I was really pleased with the way we did come out and play," Rough Riders head coach Brent DeBoer said. "You never expect to score points right away because you shouldn't."
Stevens (2-8) didn't register a first down until midway through the second quarter on its 24th offensive play. That drive didn't end well as Roosevelt senior David Sturdevant returned a punt 70 yards for his fourth score of the half.
Roosevelt out-gained Stevens 334 to 137. None of the Rough Riders' scoring drives lasted more than four plays. All but one of Roosevelt's scoring drives began in Raiders territory.
"Playoffs. It's a whole new season," Riders defensive lineman Isaac Jorgensen said. "We were jacked up no matter who it was against."
Stevens coach Paul Miller had no problem with that, even rebuffing the suggestion that scoring as many second-half points as Roosevelt - each tallied a safety and a touchdown - was some sort of moral victory.
"That's life, that's the playoffs, that's the way it's supposed to be," he said. "That's competition. No arguments, no complaints."
Monday's quarterfinal will pit Roosevelt (8-2) against either No. 5 Brandon Valley or Spearfish.
