RAPID CITY - A near-capacity crowd at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center got to see some strong performances from area cowboys and cowgirls.

Belle Fourche's Cleve Schmidt, the top-ranked bareback rider in the world, scored an 87 on Mossbrucker's Speckled Moon to take the lead in the bareback. Colorodan Tim Shirley and Owanka-native Dustin Reeves each scored 83s while Royce Ford, another Coloradan scored an 81. Justin McDaniel and Jess Davis, the leaders after Thursday at 80, were joined by Joe Mundorf and Zach Curran after Friday's performances.

Oelrichs' barrel racer Lisa Lockhart took the lead in the barrels with an aggregate time of 25.31 seconds to overtake Wolsey's Karin Greff, who clocked in at 25.4 on two.

Quinn cowboy J.J. Elshere uncorked a ride of 83 to overtake Rollie Wilson in saddle bronc riding.

Jerrad Hofstetter, a Texan, took a commanding lead in tie down roping with an aggregate time of 17.6 seconds on two runs. Seth Childers is in second with 19 seconds on two runs while Kolby Ungeheuer and Jon Peek are tied for third at 20.1 seconds. Will LaDuke is right behind the two cowboys tied for third at 20.2 seconds.

A familiar face to Rapid City rodeo fans, former National American University bulldogger Nick Guy, came through with an aggregate time of 9.8 seconds to overtake second round leader Matt Gilbert. Kyle Hughes (10.8 seconds), Clint Robinson (11.4) and Kyle Callaway (12.6) round out the top five.

Justin Yost and Jory Levy registered 12.9 seconds in their two runs through the team roping event to take a hold of first place. There was quite a shake-up of the top 10 in the event as the leaders after Thursday, Dylan Bransom and Dustin Davis, dropped to fifth place. John O'Connor and Beau Hutchison dropped all the way to 10th place after sitting in second after Thursday. Trice and T.J. Watts are now in second place behind Yost and Levy with an aggregate time of 13.7 seconds.

Doug Duncan of Alvin, Texas was overtaken by Charles Zoss of Forestburg after Zoss turned in an 86 on Fresh Powder to take the lead in bull riding. Timber Lake cowboy Ardie Maier is in third place after scoring an 82 on Fonzy.

The rodeo continues today with a matinee performance at 1:30 p.m. and another performance at 7:30 p.m.
