WHITE RIVER - White River held off Wall to earn a 67-62 win over the Eagles in Western Great Plains Conference girls basketball action on Tuesday night.
Caitlin Whiting led a trio of Tigers in double figures as she tallied 17 points. Shelby Horsley added 16 and Kaylee Spotted Elk netted 11 for the winners.
"We need to play a little smarter on defense," said White River head coach Troy Krogman. "I almost had to put my assistant coach in to play at the end."
Katelyn Crown scored out 16 points and Madison McLaughlin and Katrina Kjerstad had 11 points each for Wall.
The Tigers stormed to big leads in both halves only to have Wall rally back because of White River's foul troubles.
The Eagles, however, were a dismal 10-of-32 from the foul line.
"We did some good things on the floor, but we just need to cut down on our fouls," said Krogman.
The Tigers had three players foul out in the contest.
White River held a 40-35 rebounding advantage.
Kjerstad hauled in a game-high 11 for Wall.
White River (1-1) travels to Winner on Friday. The Tigers host Kadoka on Saturday.
Wall (0-3) entertains Harding County on Thursday.
Pine Ridge 53, Little Wound 49
PINE RIDGE - Pine Ridge scored a hard-fought 53-49 win over Little Wound in a West River Conference girls game on Tuesday night.
Lacey Weston dropped in 22 points and Saadia Tasso added 18 for the Thorpes.
Sopia Janis dished out 10 assists for Pine Ridge.
Nichelle Red Owl's 22 points led the Mustangs.
Pine Ridge (2-0) plays at home against Cheyenne-Eagle Butte on Saturday. Little Wound (0-2) hosts Bennett County on Monday.
Dakota Christian 54, Gregory 41
GREGORY-Alyssa Veurink dropped in a game-high 27 points as Dakota Christian spoiled the home-opener for Gregory 54-41 in a high school girls basketball game on Tuesday.
"The first half, we turned the ball over a little too much," said Gregory head coach Lonnie Klundt.
Dakota Christian opened up with an 11-point lead as Alissa Veurink scored 14 points in the first quarter and led the Lady Cadets with 19 at halftime.
"Defensively, we made that our concern at halftime," said Klundt. "We didn't let her go off like she did in the first half."
Alissa Kruse led Gregory with 13 points, and Melissa Petersen added 11.
Gregory (0-3) hosts Platte-Geddes on Friday.
Douglas 48, Hill City 43
BOX ELDER - Douglas earned a Black Hills Conference win on Tuesday night as the Patriots held off Hill City 48-43 at Whitehead Auditorium.
"The teams were very evenly matched," said Douglas head coach Melissa Jongma. "I am proud of how hard the girls played."
Courtney Balisco scored nine points, Molly Muehl eight and Sheryl Gillen seven for Douglas.
The game was close throughout. Douglas led by a 13-11 and 27-25 at the first-half breaks.
Hill City got 12 points from Carly Asheim and 10 from Alise Kelting.
Douglas was whistled for 37 fouls and had three starters foul out.
The Rangers made only 10 field goals, but went 22-of-37 from the free throw line to stay in the game.
"I thought our bench really stepped up and made a difference tonight," said Jongma.
Douglas forced 29 turnovers while committing 18.
The Patriots (1-1) will travel to Sturgis on Thursday. Hill City (0-2) visits Custer on Friday in another BHC tilt.
New Underwood 49, Faith 27
FAITH - Candi Hall popped in 23 points as New Underwood defeated Faith 49-27 in Western Great Plains basketball action on Tuesday.
The Tigers cruised out to a 14-4 lead and continued to pad the lead the rest of the way en route to the win.
Hall netted six 3-pointers and New Underwood went 7-of-7 from the free throw line.
Hanna Brown tallied 13 markers to lead the Longhorns.
Faith (0-3) travels to Timber Lake and New Underwood (2-0) will close out the 2007 portion of its schedule with a home game against the Sturgis JV on Tuesday.
Chadron 50, Hot Springs 38
HOT SPRINGS - Chadron jumped out to an early 23-9 to take control as the Cardinals spilled Hot Springs 50-38 in a non-conference game on Tuesday night.
"We took too long getting into the game," said Hot Springs head coach Levi Klippenstien. "They were able to control the paint early and that broke our backs."
Kelsie Lliteras led Chadron with 20 points while Kara Powell led the Bison with 17.
"We made a late push, but trying to make up a 23-point deficit in sixteen minutes is extremely difficult."
"We have to have a better effort next time out," said Klippenstien.
Boys games
New Underwood 75, Edgemont 50
NEW UNDERWOOD - The New Underwood Tigers overcame a slow start and defeated Edgemont 75-50 in high school boys basketball Tuesday night.
In the first game of the season for both ball clubs, Edgemont jumped out to an 8-0 lead and led 13-11 after the first quarter of play.
The Moguls shot 51 percent for the game.
"We gave up a lot of easy layups in the first quarter," said Tigers head coach Stacy Finkbeiner. "The kids worked hard, mainly on the defensive side of the court and got back into the game."
New Underwood went to a half-court man-to-man defense and outscored the Moguls 25-4 in the third quarter.
Cole Swanson led the Tigers in scoring with 19, while Jaron Finkbeiner chipped in 13.
New Underwood(1-0)travels to Faith to face the Longhorns on Friday.
MONDAY GAME
Timber Lake 69, Wakpala 42
TIMBER LAKE - Troy Lindskov scored 21 points and Nathan Kraft 19 as Timber Lake downed Wakpala 69-42 on Monday night.
Dayton Takes The Knife 14 added 14 for the Panthers who led at every quarter stop en route to the win.
Wakpala was led by Tyrus Cadotte's 14 points.
