LAS VEGAS - Europe took a commanding lead on Day 3 of Mosconi Cup XIV, but Rapid City's Shane Van Boening won his second match of the tournament for the American team's lone win on Saturday.

Europe is leading the competition 9-6 after winning four of the five matches. The tournament wraps up with six singles matches today.

In the third match Saturday, Van Boening teamed with Mosconi Cup veteran Johnny Archer to beat the European team of Konstantin Stepanov (Russia) and world champion Daryl Peach (England), 6-3, in a doubles match. It was America's lone point of the day, and pulled them within 7-6.

Archer, who is from Georgia, was the last remaining winless player on the American squad.

"I'm trying really hard," an emotional Archer said. "That was huge to win that match, and we just had to gut it out.

Van Boening and Archer fell behind 1-0, before winning the next four racks to open up a 4-1 margin. Stepanov and Peach rallied back to get within 4-3, but the American duo won the eighth and ninth racks to seal it.

Van Boening has one singles and one doubles win, and his two points are tied for tops on the team.

The Americans and Europeans were tied at 5-5 entering Saturday.

Europeans Niels Feijen (Holland) and Stepanov opened the third day with a 6-2 doubles win over Corey Deuel (Ohio) and Archer. That put the Europeans up 6-5 for the tourney.

Malta's Tony Drago then put the Europeans up 7-5 with a 6-4 singles win over Deuel.

After the Van Boening-Archer win brought the Americans to 7-6, Feijen and Germany's Ralf Souquet then recorded back-to-back singles wins to close out the day, leaving Europe up 9-6.

Feijen beat Hawaiian Rodney Morris 6-4, while Souquet also defeated North Carolina's Earl Strickland by a 6-4 margin.
