RAPID CITY - The 40th renewal of Black Hills Common Cents Tennis Open promises some court fireworks to go with the Independence Day holiday.
The junior tournament runs today through Friday at the Sioux Park Courts. The adults serve it up starting on Friday and running through Sunday.
The 91 junior entries include luminaries from the state high school ranks taking to the courts against their counterparts from North Dakota and Minnesota, and including several top players from Rapid City Stevens, Rapid City Central, St. Thomas More and Pierre.
"The older divisions are pretty big because the kids need these points to make it for national tournaments," said tournament director Jason Olson. "You get a lot of North Dakota kids and Minnesota kids as well as our South Dakota kids."
Among the entries are Rapid City Stevens players Kelly Feehan and Kaitlyn Wright, who was forced to miss this tournament last year after suffering a serious
shoulder injury at a summer basketball camp. Former Stevens girls doubles partners Lauren Shultz and Morgan Paluch are also entered.
Among the boys entries are Flight 2 state champion Jack Hamburg, of Rapid City Stevens; Gavin Fenske, Nathaniel Cherry and Jonathan Ries, of Rapid City Central; and recent Central grads Tom Tolman and South Dakota State University commit Dan Tully.
From state champion Sioux Falls O'Gorman are flight champions Kevin Rance and Tommy
Entwistle and Flight 1 runner-up Brad Entwistle.
"Jack Hamburg and Brad Entwistle could be the Flight 1 singles championship match-up for the next couple of years," Olson said.
"It's a really good mix. I was looking at the boys 16 draw and it's like, wow, a flight 1 state tournament," Olson said
The adult portion of the tournament has $6,000 in prize money up for grabs.
Last year's tournament saw Tony Larson, of Alexandria, Minn., defeat Hamburg in the men's open finals, while Tabitha Knop, of Colorado Springs, Colo., downed Whitney Paluch, of Rapid City, for the women's open championship.
