Area AAU wrestlers qualify for state meet

RAPID CITY - Wrestlers from more than 20 area clubs claimed top honors in a total of 84 weight classes at Saturday's Region 1 AAU tournament in Sturgis. They, and other top-three finishers, advance to next weekend's state tournament in Rapid City.

Sturgis boasted 12 individual title winners. They were Dominic Ulmer, Jacob Wood, Matt Willey, Daniel Walter, Brandon Delzer, Ryan Willey, Rance Sivertsen, Zane Joens, Caleb Karrels, John Wilson, Tanner Bothwell and Jacob Beug.

Rapid City Westside's state representation will feature nine region champions: Cody Stockman, Colton Vickerman, Mason Russell, Ryan Krebs, Kasey Klapprodt, Jordan Moser, Dylan Larson, Cole Perrett and Jarren Jensen.

Hot Springs, plus the Rapid City Cobbler Kids, will send eight champions to state. TJ Atwood, Marcus Harkless, Morgan Harkless, Kody Hagen, Brice Harkless, Jacob Desevsa, Justin Harkless and Jared Harkless are representing Hot Springs. The Cobbler Kids' region title winners are Carson Schwalbe, Ethan Kulm, Tyler Pfeifle, Brady Rude, Martin Mueller, Aero Amo, Shane O'Connell and Joe Sigler.

Joshua Borah, Devin Stork, Alan Heidinger, Tyler Abbott, Justin Miller, Amanda Molone and Kota Simonson of Douglas claimed region crowns. Philip representatives Keece Heltzel, Keagan Fitch, Rance Johnson, Nick Donnely, Bodhi Lytle and Jace Nelson all claimed region titles.

Adam Walters, Carol Long and Wiconi Rose Runs Above will represent Pine Ridge as region title winners. Custer is sending Myles Kirk, Dawson Johnson, and Tanner Eiesland to Rapid City as region champions.

Three other area clubs each boasted three regional title holders. They were Spearfish (Slayton Ludens, Nathan Rotert, Seth McFarland), Wall (Cass Lytle, Lane Blasius, Alexa Dunker), and Harding County (Trevor Gress, Steven Koch, Ryne Baier).

Jesse Thybo and Sierra Lawrence, of Belle Fourche, claimed top honors in their respective classes. Union Center (Jacob Schalesky and Tallina Spring), Bennett County (Chandler Bakley and Jessica Begeman), Dupree (Wyatt Knight and Garrett Keegan) and Edgemont (Kyle Litzel and Jessica Tubbs) are also sending two region winners each to state.

Other regional champions were Kadoka's Jadyn Coller, Wasta's Raiden Crawford, Whitewood's Tate Overland, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte's Jett Peterson, Rapid City Black and Blue's Jacob Weber, Kyle's Marissa Zimiga, Rapid City Central's Travis Reber, Rapid City's Aaron Rude and Newell's Colter Steinmetz.

State weigh-ins begin Friday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Wrestling will start at 9 a.m., April 5. Wrestling on championship Sunday is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
