Rodeo: Area riders steal the show

DEADWOOD - Gillette's Chet Johnson and Chad Ferley, of Oelrichs, earned identical scores of 84 to lead Thursday's first go-round of Saddle Bronc Riding at the Days of '76 Rodeo.

Jeff Willert, of Belvidere, scored an 81 with Jordan Furnish in with an 80.

In bull riding, Las Vegas, Nev., cowboy Colin McTaggart scored an 82 to lead the way with Colby Reilly, of Stratford, Wash., in second with an 80.

John Addison topped the night's Bareback Riding standings with an 85, with Scott Montague, of Rapid City, tied with Dustin Reeves, of Owanka, with identical 81s.

Doug Pfarr, of Victoria, Texas, with an 8.6 topped Thursday's tie-down roping. Cimmaron Boardman, of Stephenville, Texas, leads the average with an 18.5 after two rounds.

Ronnie Fields clocked a 3.9 in steer wrestling. Tom Hansen' s 9.1 on two leads the average.

In team roping, Arizona cowboys Derrick Begay and Victor Aros combined for a 4.3 run, with Trevor Brazile, of Decatur, Texas, and Patrick Smith, of Midland, Texas, leading the average with an 11.0 on two.

Lisa Lockhart's 16.74 clocking led barrel racing, with Sherry Cervi just .21 back.

Rodeo action continues with another twilight performance tonight at 6 p.m. at the Deadwood Rodeo Grounds. Matinee performances are Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
