LOVELAND, Colo. - Another Central Hockey League showdown between Rapid City and Colorado. Another overtime. Another shootout.
And another win for Colorado.
The Eagles' Scott Polaski knocked home the winning goal, a straightaway forehand on Rapid City goalie Miguel Beaudry to give Colorado a 2-1 edge in the shootout, and a 5-4 win over the Rush on Saturday night at the Budweiser Events Center.
Polaski watched his teammates during the shootout and decided the direct approach was the way to go.
"There was no way I was going to find a spot I was comfortable with, so I tried to find a spot where he (Beaudry) wasn't," said Polaski.
Kevin Ulanski, the first of seven skaters for each team in the shootout, also banged home a goal for Colorado.
R.G. Flath scored the lone shootout goal for Rapid City.
As in Friday night's season-opener, a 7-6 Rapid City loss, the Rush powered back late to force overtime.
The Rush's Blair Manning, along with Colorado's Konrad Reeder and Aaron Schneekloth crowded the penalty box with slightly more than two minutes to play and Rapid City trailing 4-3.
Rush coach Joe Ferras pulled Beaudry to give Rapid City the five-on-three advantage. Rich Hansen banged home his second goal of the night when Gio Flamminio's shot rebounded off of the skate of Eagle defenseman Jason Beatty.
'Those five-on-three penalties are hard to kill," said Eagle coach Kevin McClelland. "We've got to stop putting ourselves in that position."
Rapid City took an early 2-0 lead, on goals from Rich Hansen and Chris Di Ubaldo.
Hansen took a clean pass from Flamminio and beat Cey with 8:14 gone in the first period. Di Ulbaldo scored 90 seconds later for a 2-0 lead.
But no lead is safe against Colorado, which won 27-of-32 home games last season. The Eagles retook the lead on three unanswered goals.
Ed McGrane, Konrad Reeder and Greg Pankewicz gave the Eagles a 3-2 lead at the end of the second period.
Flath knotted the tally at 3-3 with a goal with 6:43 gone in the third, but Colorado responded on a wide open feed from Ryan Tobler to Ed McGrane.
Ferras was understandably disappointed.
"Coming into a shootout both night. I've to believe that Colorado has respect for how hard we played both night," Ferras said. "Two points are huge. We deserved a better fate than how we came out both nights.
"Coming in against such a well-established hockey club, I think we opened a few eyes."
Beaudry stopped 37-of-41 shots between the pipes for Rapid City. Cey was 31-of-35 on shots-on-goal for Colorado.
Both teams combined for 48 penalty minutes. Rapid City was 3-of-11 on power-play goals. Colorado converted on 4-of-11 power plays.
"We came out and outshot them 6-1, but then there were four quick penalties on us and that changed the whole momentum of the game," McClelland said. "They scored two quick goals, but we were resilient and came back."
Rapid City (0-2 overall) continues its season-opening 14-game road skein traveling to Corpus Christi, Texas, on Friday to take on the Ice Rayz.
Colorado, 2-0, plays division foe Rocky Mountain Rage in Broomfield on Wednesday, Oct. 22.
RUSH NOTES: Two additions to the Rapid City roster for opening weekend include Blair Manning, a
5-foot-10, 175 forward obtained in a trade with the Texas Brahmas for future considerations, and Les Reaney, a 6-2, 221-pound forward obtained on loan from AAA Springfield of the American Hockey League.
Reaney signed with the Edmonton Oilers in February. Manning, a right-hander, tallied 63 points (11 goals, 52 assists) with 60 penalty minutes in a full season with Texas last season.
Debuting for Colorado on Saturday night was Konrad Reeder, 5-9, 175 pound right-winger obtained from New Mexico in trade for the rights to Seth Leonard. Reeder was the second leading scorer in the CHL last year with 108 points, 41 goals and 67 assists.
Rapid City's Brady Olsen and Eric Nelson were placed on training camp injured list for injuries incurred during last weekend's preseason games at Rocky Mountain and Colorado.
Saturday night's game attendance at the Budweiser Events Center was 2,589, the 196th consecutive sellout crowd, a CHL record for the Colorado Eagles.
