RAPID CITY - Chadron, Neb., native and former Black Hills State football standout Zac Alcorn has found a new home in the National Football League.

Released from the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 1, Alcorn, a 6-4, 255-pound tight end, signed with the San Francisco 49'ers on Wednesday.

According to a team news release, the 49'ers released tight end Zac Herold to make room for Alcorn on the eight-player practice squad roster.

Black Hills State football coach John Scott said Alcorn spent the weekend in Spearfish before flying to San Francisco early Monday morning.

The Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs had also expressed interest in Alcorn, Scott said.

Alcorn, 27, was originally signed by the Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2006. He spent the first part of the season on Green Bay's practice squad before being activated to the 53-man playing roster last November.

Alcorn played in six of the Packers' last seven games, mostly on special teams.

Alcorn, a native of Chadron, started during the 2004-05 seasons at Black Hills State. Alcorn caught 43 passes for 689 yards and seven touchdowns for the Yellow Jackets in 2005.
