MITCHELL - Tuesday, Mitchell Post 18's seven-game winning streak was snapped by Pierre.

On Wednesday, Mitchell picked right back up where it left off with a 10-5 win over Rapid City Post 22 at Cadwell Park. That win not only got Post 18 back on track, it also proved they can play with anyone in the state.

Wednesday marked the first time Mitchell has beat Post 22 since 1999.

"It's been as long as I've been coaching at least, and I'm in my fifth year," Mitchell coach Luke Norden said. "We've been close a couple times, and we've been right there with them. If we keep hitting the ball like we did tonight, we can pretty much beat anybody."

Mitchell made it clear early that its goal Wednesday night was to come out and beat Rapid City. Cade Hearnen hit a leadoff triple to start the game and scored on Jason Schmidt's sacrifice fly to center to get Post 18 on the board.

Mitchell followed up with three runs on a two-out rally in the second inning. Mike Larson hit a fly to right field and Alex VanOverschelde struck out to start the inning, but Brock Estes walked Steve Jackson and Hearnen and Alex Loes hit an infield single just out of reach of Post 22 second baseman Jordan Mette.

Estes walked Schmidt to score Hearnen, and Brett Young came up with a two-run single to center field to give Post 18 a 4-1 lead.

"Normally, we talk about taking good swings with two outs and we took really good swings tonight," Norden said. "We hit the ball on the line hard and did a good job whether it was no outs or two outs or whatever."

Jordan Piper got to first on an error, one of four by Post 22, to start the third inning and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Mike Larson. VanOverschelde hit a single to deep center to score Piper, and eventually scored the winning run three batters later when Loes singled to center.

Rapid City brought in Brad Horan to finish out the third inning, and Estes was tagged with the loss after two innings of work.

"We weren't ready to play," Post 22 coach Dave Ploof said. "Our first pitcher, this was the first outing he's thrown (this year). He had some surgery, and he's coming back. He looked pretty good, he just lost focus and that hurt. Then we couldn't make plays and routine stuff behind him.

"Generally when that happens, you're going to get kicked."

Rapid City (12-6 overall) clawed to within 6-4 in the top of the fifth inning after holding Post 18 scoreless in the fourth, the only inning it managed to do so. Jordan Mette reached on an error and Sam Wolff singled past second. Mette scored on a wild throw and Wolff touched home on a sac fly to right field by Steven Ficken, but that's where Post 22's rally would end.

Wolff was 3-for-4 with a triple and a double and Jarrett Jensen was 2-for-4 for Post 22, which is headed to Omaha, Neb., to play in the College World Series Legion Tournament.
