Area Scene: West River women will be honored for coaching efforts

SIOUX FALLS - Two coaches will be honored at the South Dakota Girls and Women in Sports Awards Banquet on June 2 at the Ramkota Hotel and Conference Center in Sioux Falls.

Donna Schmitz of Gregory and Jo Ann Sterner of Rapid City will receive the South Dakota Girls and Women in Sports Leadership Award

Schmitz has been active in education and athletics at Gregory for her entire career. She was instrumental in expanding girls volleyball programs throughout the state. Her 31-year coaching career makes her the most experienced active volleyball coach in the state.

Sterner began her teaching and coaching career in the Rapid City school district. While there, she started girls volleyball, and track and field, team and was involved in the first non-sanctioned gymnastics meet for high school girls in South Dakota.

Elks to host four-person golf scramble Saturday

RAPID CITY - The Elks Golf Course will have a four-person scramble Saturday with tee times from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event will feature four flights and a women's flight with payouts. The 10-stroke rule will apply and participants must have a USGA handicap or play scratch.

Tennis Block Party offers fun events, prizes

SPEARFISH - The Spearfish Tennis Association will host a free tennis block party from 9 a.m. to noon June 2 at the tennis courts by Spearfish High School.

USTA representative Jeff Nelson will host skill games and will provide a radar gun to test serving speeds. The party will have snacks, prizes and fun for the entire family.

Registration for summer recreation programs - as well as information on lessons, social nights and team tennis - will be available.

Stevens basketball camps begin in June

RAPID CITY - Stevens High School will host a variety of girls basketball summer camps.

Individual camps will be in June. Grades 5-7 will meet from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., and grades 8-12 will meet from

1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on June 11-13. Grades K-4 will meet June 20 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Philip Nite Owl tourney begins June 22

PHILIP - The Philip Nite Owl men's football tournament will be June 22-23.

The entry fee is $175 per team.

Golf event benefits children's charity

RAPID CITY - The Children's Miracle Network golf tournament will be at the Elks Golf Course on June 1. All of the proceeds will benefit CMN at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

The tournament is an 18-hole, two-person scramble event with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. The cost to participate is $125 per person, which includes green fees, a cart, a bag of golf gifts and an awards lunch. The lunch is a steak grill for all golfers on the same day at the Elks Lodge. The presentation of awards will be after lunch. Extra lunch tickets are available for guests for $18.50.

Association offers summer tennis leagues

RAPID CITY - Black Hills Tennis Association and the Rapid City Recreation Department are offering adult recreational tennis leagues at Sioux Park this summer.

The first session will begin during the week of June 4 (weather permitting). The first session is shorter than the second, therefore the cost is differnt - $16 per league for session 1 and $20 per league for session 2.

The following leagues are available: Monday evening, mens' league. Tuesday evening, ladies beginner league, Wednesday morning, ladies league. Wednesday evening, ladies league and Thursday, mixed doubles league.

There are discounts for BHTA members.

Chadron State offers several summer camps

CHADRON, Neb. - June will again bring hundreds of elementary and high school students to the Chadron State College campus for work on their skills in a variety of sports. The camps will be conducted by Chadron State coaches and athletes in football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling and track and field.

In addition, a session to help athletes of all sports improve their speed has been added. The Speed Camp, which will be offered by the Eagles' track and field staff, will be June 23-24.

Fishermen can net $1,000 at Mobridge

MOBRIDGE - Anglers should experience some of the best fishing during the

Mobridge Chamber of Commerce Walleye Classic at Lake Oahe on June 9.

The water level of Lake Oahe is up 10 feet from last year. Even with lower than normal water levels, there are still depths exceeding 100 feet.

The rules meeting for the event is June 8 at Oahe Hills Country Club. For entering the tournament, Participants get a chance to win a 50-inch plasma flat screen television valued at $3,000 plus many other prizes.

First place earns $1,000, and 20 percent of entries will receive payouts. Weigh-in and Launch will be at "The Bay." The tournament registration form must be completed, signed and returned along with an entry fee of $100 per two or three person team.
