RAPID CITY - Don't be surprised to turn on the television someday and see Kimmy Kaufman playing professional golf. The senior from Clark won her second consecutive state Class B championship Tuesday at Hart Ranch Golf Course, and led Clark to its second consecutive team title.

Kaufman's performance was remarkable. She shot a 66 on Tuesday - on a course that can get players in a lot of trouble - with two eagles and five birdies for a two-day score of 137, and finished seven-under-par. Kaufman wowed the crowd off the tee hitting long, towering, straight drives and her approach play was something most golfers only dream about. Her putts looked as if they were connected to the hole with a string.

"Today was a great day," said Kaufman. "Our team did really well. The first eagle was a short par five, so sometimes I play it like a par four to get that eagle. The next one, I got kind of lucky with a good bounce to the green, and I was just trying to get it close for the tap in birdie, but it fell."

After the first nine holes, it was apparent that Kaufman would retain her title, and that Britney Hanten from Deuel would finish second. Hanten shot a 75 Tuesday for a total score of 151. Hanten played well coming into the day, being only five strokes behind. But Kaufman's play was just too strong.

Because the top two positions were secured early, the race for third became the feature of the top-flight group. Wall's Katelyn Crown and Sioux Valley's Kelsey Bortnem battled it out until the 18th hole.

Both golfers hit fairways consistently on their drives, usually hit the green on their second shots, and almost never three-putted. Going into the last hole, they were knotted at plus-10. On the 18th, Crown went into the rough off the tee, giving Bortnem the advantage. Bortnem hit the green in three on the par five. So Crown had to make up a shot coming out of the rough. She took a safe out, and then hit the green with her next shot.

Bortnem was about thirty feet out, but couldn't hit the par putt. Crown sunk a nice bogey putt from about seven feet to finish the round with an 85. Bortnem then missed a five-foot putt which secured third place for Crown.

"It was a beautiful day today, and I expected to do well," Crown said. "I felt fairly happy with my game, except that I struggled putting. I knew Kelsey (Bortnem) and I were close going into the last hole, she pushed me all day. She's an excellent player and she's fun to play with. I just got lucky I made my putt."

Crown's two day totals combine with her teammates Amanda Johnson, who shot a personal best 87 for a total of 181, and Shayla Johnson's 208, was enough to give Wall a total score of 557 and solid second-place in the state.

"Our girls really stepped up today," Wall head coach Mark Ammann said. "We shot well yesterday and had to improve on that to take a run at Clark, and we did. We improved our score by five strokes, but it wasn't quite enough. I'm really proud of these girls. It was a solid team effort."
