Brad Tunge ran for 180 yards on 24 carries and returned an interception for a touchdown as Hurley/Marion beat Lyman, 56-14, Saturday in Presho to advance to the 9AA state title game.
Darin Schoenwald added 11 carries for 44 yards for the Cobras, and scored three rushing touchdowns. He also caught a 62-yard touchdown pass from Bo LeCroix as Hurley/Marion rallied from a 14-8 deficit in the second quarter to score 48 unanswered points.
Dawson Jandreau carried the ball 28 times for 192 yards for Lyman, but he had only 10 yards in the second half, and fumbled several times as the Raiders had four turnovers in the game, including the interception for a touchdown and a fumble that came with the Raiders up 14-8 and driving deep into Hurley/Marion territory.
Lyman also had a punt blocked, a safety when the snap on a punt sailed into the end zone, and a drive that stalled at the 5-yard line after the Raiders had a second-and-goal at the 1-yard line, which could have cut the score to 30-22 in the third quarter.
Ipswich 22, Chester Area 8: Ipswich knocked off Chester Area 22-8 in the Class 9AA football semifinals to earn a trip to the championship game at the DakotaDome in Vermillion for the first time in 23 years.
Tiger quarterback Taylor Weigel rallied Ipswich back from an 8-0 deficit by scoring on a 1-yard run and tossing touchdown passes of three yards to Chad Dutenhoffer and 26 yards to Barry Davis to seal the win.
After Chester quarterback Drew Kreutzfeldt scored on a 14-yard first-quarter run, the Tigers put the clamps on the visitors. With the score tied at 8-8, Kreutzfeldt left the game with an injury with 8:52 left in the second quarter.
The Flyers finished with 132 yards of total offense with 73 of those coming on the opening drive of the game.
Jayson Geditz rushed for 139 yards as the Tigers racked up 232 yards on the ground.
Matt Braun led the Ipswich defense with 17 tackles.
Ipswich (11-0 overall) will take on Marion-Hurley (9-2) in the 9AA championship game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Class 11AA
S.F. WASHINGTON 21, O'GORMAN 14: The Sioux Falls Washington Warriors forced turnovers, smashed bodies up front and sprinkled in big plays for a
21-14 victory over the Sioux Falls O'Gorman Knights in Saturday's Class 11AA semifinals.
Matt Hermanson scored on a 5-yard touchdown run with 5:53 left to lift the third-ranked Warriors (11-1 overall), who sealed the win on Brandon Mohr's interception at the Warrior 31 with 40 seconds left.
No. 2 O'Gorman (10-2) tied the game at 14-14 on Phil Wright's 59-yard touchdown catch from Tony Viger with 7:27 remaining.
O'Gorman committed four turnovers in the game, while Washington was turnover-free.
Brett Grevlos completed
11-of-14 passes for 194 yards for the Warriors, who advance to the DakotaDome for the second straight year against the Lincoln-Brandon Valley winner.
S.F. LINCOLN 21, BRANDON VALLEY 13: The Class 11AA finals will be an all Sioux Falls affair, but traditional west-side powers O'Gorman and Roosevelt won't be anywhere near it.
A few hours after Washington punched its ticket to the DakotaDome, the Lincoln Patriots did the same with a 21-13 victory over top-ranked and previously undefeated Brandon Valley.
The fourth-ranked Patriots (10-2) used a textbook formula to earn the win. A nice balance of run and pass early, strong defense throughout, and a ground game that wore down the opposing defense in the final quarter.
Class 11A
Dell Rapids 12, Harrisburg 7: Dell Rapids advanced to the Class 11A title game for the second time in three years, knocking off Harrisburg 12-7 in a hard-fought contest Saturday night.
Kevin Berg scored twice and the Quarriers took advantage of three huge Harrisburg turnovers to reach the championship game, where they will take on Winner on Friday night in Vermillion at the Dome.
Berg, scored on a 10-yard run in the first quarter than scored the game-winner with 9 minutes, 52 seconds to play in the game on a 2-yard run as the Quarriers
(9-2 overall) won their fourth straight and beat the Tigers for the second time in just over two weeks.
Harrisburg (8-3) got on the board when Preston Harris scored from six yards out with just 16 seconds left before the intermission. Connor Auch's kick gave the Tigers a 7-6 lead.
Dell Rapids was coming off a 19-14 upset win over top-ranked West Central on Monday night.
Class 9A
GETTYSBURG 44, ARLINGTON 8: Gettysburg steamrolled into the Class 9A Championship game with a 44-8 win over Arlington on Saturday in Gettysburg.
The Battlers rushed for 339 yards as Jared Schrempp scored on runs of 15, 45 and 2-yards in the win.
For the game Schrempp racked up 253 yards on 20 carries.
Gettysburg took control early by rolling up five touchdowns before Arlington dented the scoreboard in the fourth quarter.
The Battler defense was stout allowing only 102 yards on 36 rushing attempts and 62 passing yards.
Gettysburg 9-2 overall, will take on Avon (10-1) for the title in the DakotaDome in Vermillion on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
Avon 49, Sully Buttes 14: The Avon Pirates scored on their first seven possessions en route to a 49-14 victory over Sully Buttes in the Class 9A semifinals at the DakotaDome on Saturday night.
Avon (10-1 overall) will take on Gettysburg in pursuit of its first title since 2005 in the Class 9A title game on Thursday in the Dakota Dome.
Leading the charge for Avon was standout running back Earv Archambeau, who ran for 147 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries despite not even playing in the second half.
Senior tight end Matt Dykstra was a weapon through the air for the Pirates, which led 43-0 at the half, as he caught three passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns.
Sully Buttes (6-4) added two late scores as Senftner caught a 44-yard pass from Hayden Handcock and a 2-yard score by Caleb Kemink.
Kemink rushed for 192 yards for the Chargers.
Class 11B
Tri-Valley 18, Platte-Geddes/Dakota Christian 0: Defending Class 11B state champion Tri-Valley dominated its 11B semifinal game against Platte-Geddes/Dakota Christian as it marched 81 yards on its first drive en route to an 18-0 win over the Black Panthers.
The second-ranked Mustangs (10-1 overall) will face Groton in a rematch of last year's state finals, won 20-14 by Tri-Valley, in the DakotaDome on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
Nate Kirby started the scoring with a
40-yard touchdown run, the Mustangs doubled the lead to 12-0 when Austin King scored on a 12-yard pass from Brennan Welbig.
Jake Lidel completed the scoring when he capped a 37-yard, five-play drive with a touchdown with 2:05 to play in the first half.
The top-ranked Black Panthers lost for the first time this season and closed with a 10-1 mark.
Class 9B
HANDON 50, HERREID 0: Hanson earned its first trip to the South Dakota state high school football finals since 2005 with a decisive 50-0 win over Herreid in the Class 9B semifinals win Saturday in Hanson.
Hanson awaits the winner of Monday's weather-delayed semifinal contest between Harding County and Hitchcock-Tulare in Tulare.
Austin Letcher scored on rushing touchdowns of 11, 65 and 36 yards and also caught a 37-yard pass from quarterback Tyson Gau to lead Hanson, 11-0.
Matt McManus and Tyler Hoffman also scored rushing touchdowns, and Jamin Bridge added a 41-yard fumble return for a touchdown for the Beavers.
Hanson tallied 286 yards of offense, including 249 yards on the ground. Letcher finished with 141 yards rushing on just six carries.
Herreid (8-3) was held to 111 yards of total offense. The 9B championship is set for Thursday at 10 a.m. MST, at the DakotaDome in Vermillion.
