SPEARFISH - Run-scoring hits by Jess Cooper and Chase Bridges allowed Spearfish to snap a 5-5 tie, and record a 7-5 win over Sturgis in a matchup of Region 3A American Legion Baseball teams in the Queen City team's home finale on Tuesday at Black Hills Power Stadium.

A two-run triple by Sturgis' Andy Jones in the top of the seventh inning tied the contest at 5-5.

Jordan Johnson led off the home half of the seventh with a single. He promptly stole second base. Cooper lined a two-bagger, scoring Johnson. Bridges then delivered an RBI single, plating Cooper for a 7-5 Post 164 advantage.

Allen Hemeyer relieved starting and winning pitcher Cody Rosenau in the eighth inning. Hemeyer fanned three of the six Sturgis batters he faced.

Sturgis starting hurler Michael Baldwin walked four straight Spearfish batters, forcing in the first run of the game in the home half of the second inning.

Post 33 knotted the game at 1-1 on Kasidy Huffman's base rap in the visitors' portion of the third.

Spearfish reclaimed the lead on a throwing error by the Titans in the bottom of the third.

Dustin Wisener had a foul ball go off his knee while batting in the fifth frame. Wisener was taken out of the game. "Hopefully, it's just a bruise," said Spearfish manager Matt Kemp.

Post 164 plated a pair of unearned runs in the inning, taking a 4-1 lead.

Sturgis shaved the deficit to 4-3, scoring twice in the top of the sixth. The potential game-tying run was called out on play at the plate, much to the dismay of the Key City faithful.

Cooper collected two hits for Spearfish. Johnson, Bridges, Hemeyer, Rick White and Rosenau had one hit each. Johnson and Cooper each scored two runs. Hemeyer, Ryan Royer and Justin Kemp contributed one run apiece.

"Hitting wise, this was one of our weaker games," said Kemp. "We didn't strike the ball well. We found a way to win the game."

"It was a hard-played game by both teams," said Sturgis manager Nic Ewing. "Both teams made big hits in the clutch. A couple of missed throws cost us three runs."

Jones was three-for-five in batting. Eli Bueno and Bryan Cooley chipped in two hits each. Huffman and Trevor Potts notched one hit apiece.

Baldwin was saddled with the pitching setback for Post 33.

Sturgis (9-23 overall) hosts Gillette, Wyo., in a twin bill on Thursday.

Spearfish (34-15) meets Rapid City Post 22 Split Squad at noon and Aberdeen at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Marshall Tubbs Tournament in Rapid City.
