YANKTON - The 20th annual South Dakota-Nebraska boys' and girls' high school all-star basketball games will be played on Saturday, June 14 at Cimpl Arena on the campus of Mount Marty College in Yankton. The girls are scheduled to tip off at 3 p.m. and the boys at 5 p.m.
The South Dakota boys' team has three West River standouts making the trip. The state's all-time leading scorer - White River's Louie Krogman - St. Thomas More's Nathan Jacobson and Red Cloud's Christian McGhee are all scheduled to compete for South Dakota. All three players are planning on continuing their playing careers at the collegiate level.
Krogman will attend the University of South Dakota, Jacobson is staying in Rapid City to go to South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and McGhee is heading to Chadron State.
The trio should have a fun time chasing Bellevue West point guard Antoine Young, who is headed to Creighton University in the fall.
The home crowd will be getting its last chance to see University of Minnesota-bound Colton Iverson. The 6-foot-9 Yankton standout will be the game's biggest player, followed by Nebraskans Porter Birtell (6-7) and Josh Lynch (6-8). Watertown's Jordan Burchatz and West Central's Jeff Viereck, both 6-8, will provide extra size for South Dakota.
The girls' team doesn't have a single West River player on the roster, as Sully Buttes' Alexis Yackley is the closest area player. Yackley (Iowa State), West Central's Vanessa Johnson (South Dakota State), Brookings' Ellyce Youngren (South Dakota State) and Milbank's Amber Wollschlager (Drake) are all signed to play Division I basketball next season.
Lincoln Southeast's Katie Birkel, a 5-8 guard, is Nebraska's only D-I signee (North Dakota State).
White River coach Eldon Marshall and Watertown's Brian Norberg will coach the South Dakota boys' team and Sioux Falls O'Gorman's Kent Kolsrud and West Central's Joe Caffrey will coach the girls' team.
Archbishop Bergan's Chirs Paulson and Waverly's Gary Nunnally are coaching the Nebraska boys while Bancroft Rosalie's Trudy Samuelson and Norfolk Catholic's Tim Kassemeier will head the girls' team.
