SIOUX FALLS - Rapid City Stevens owns a one-point lead over Yankton after the opening day of the state Class AA track & field meet.
The Raiders, competing at Brandon Valley High School, scored 43 points on the first day of the meet. Yankton is second with 42 points, Sioux Falls Washington is third with 38 and Sioux Falls Roosevelt is fourth with 35. Sturgis is fifth with 17.
Rapid City Central's girls are ninth heading into the final day of competition with 8-1/2 points.
In the "AA" boys division, Roosevelt leads the way with 33-1/2 points. Rapid City Central is next with 24, followed by defending boys team champion Pierre and Watertown, both with 22. Rapid City Stevens is fifth with 21.
In the Class A girls division, McCook Central owns a narrow lead over St. Thomas More in the team chase. The Cougars scored 25-1/2 points Friday at Lennox. The Cavaliers scored 22 points behind victories by Josie Bloom in the triple and long jumps.
Parkston is third with 18-1/2.
Canton leads the boys "A" division with 38 points. Madison is second with 27.
Faith and Freeman are locked up in first place in the girls division with 16 points each. Willow Lake is second with 15, Stickney is fourth with 14-1/2 and Hitchcock-Tulare is fifth with 14.
Twelve teams are within six points of the lead heading into Saturday's finals at Howard Wood Field.
Hanson owns a one-point lead over Selby Area in the Class B boys team chase.
The Beavers scored 21 points Friday. The Lions are next with 20. Great Plains Lutheran is third with 19.6. Lemmon, Highmore-Harrold, Gettysburg and Ipswich each scored 15 points during the opening day of action.
