DEADWOOD - Seven different players scored touchdowns for Lead-Deadwood as the Golddiggers presented first-year head coach Tony Biesiot with a 63-26 win over Hill City in the 16th annual Prospector Bowl on Saturday afternoon at Ferguson Field in Deadwood.

Garret Aman, senior running back rushed for three touchdowns and 204 yards for the homestanding 'Diggers.

"We came out with intensity. Our line did a good job of blocking," Aman said. "Shane Dubray played really well in his first game at quarterback."

Lead-Deadwood capitalized on four Rangers' turnovers in the first quarter, building a 22-6 advantage. Aman's 34-yard touchdown run and ensuing two-point conversion run handed Lead-Deadwood a lead it never relinquished with 10:05 left in the opening quarter. A fumble recovery set up the initial score of the game.

"Lead-Deadwood came out ready to play, and we didn't," Hill City coach Todd Weber said.

"The name of the game is to take advantage of opportunities," Biesiot said. "This was great for the kids. This will give them some confidence."

After the teams traded fumble recoveries by Andrew Utech of Lead-Deadwood and Quint Wooldridge of Hill City, Riley Norton's fumble recovery in the end zone gave the hosts a 15-0 edge.

Sophomore Chance Clason returned the ensuing kickoff 81 yards to paydirt, putting the Rangers on the board.

Aman added 21 and 1-yard touchdown runs, upping the Lead-Deadwood advantage to 28-6 in the second period.

Dubray connected with Leif Atkinson, the team's starting quarterback for the first two games of the season, on a 16-yard scoring strike at the 3:45 mark of the quarter.

Josh Robison's 13-yard scoring run pulled Hill City to within 35-12 at the half.

Kenny Miller hauled in a five-yard touchdown reception and converted lineman Trevor Tridle bulled into the end zone from two yards out, giving the 'Diggers a 49-12 edge.

"There is a lot more to this game than wins and losses," Biesiot said about Tridle's touchdown. It was great to see the smile on Trevor's face. It's some thing he will remember all of his life."

Hill City answered with a three-yard touchdown run by Cody Skiles and a 27-yard score by Clason, slicing the margin to 49-26. Clason rushed for 96 yards.

Lead-Deadwood finalized the scoring on a four-yard run by reserve back Justin Rogers and an interception return for six points by Devin Vogel.

"We're young and still under-manned," Weber said. Hill City has only 15 players on the varsity roster.

"There is no quit in our kids. They kept battling.

"We're looking for good things down the road from our backfield." Dusty Swanson, Robison and Clason are sophomores, and quarterback Colton McLaughlin is a junior.

Josh Thompson led the 'Diggers' defense with 10 tackles. Lucas Reller recovered two fumbles.

In spite of the six turnovers Lead-Deadwood's defense forced, Biesiot said, "We are not executing on defense the way I want them to."

"We felt we had to come out and run the football," said Biesiot about the offense. "It was a good game by Garret. He is a competitor."

Jake Zoodsma added 116 rushing yards. Lead-Deadwood churned out 392 yards on the ground

Lead-Deadwood (1-2, 0-1 BHC) visits Hot Springs in a conference game on Friday. Hill City (0-2) hosts Bennett County in the Rangers' homecoming on Friday.
