STURGIS - Chalk up another win for the Sturgis girls basketball team.
The Scoopers took control midway through the second period and declawed the Huron Tigers 67-47 in Saturday's non-conference contest at Grunwald Auditorium. Sturgis, which improves to 8-6, has defeated six of its past seven opponents.
Huron (6-10) used a Katie Weeldreyer free throw to stay within 22-21. Carsey Barden netted a free throw and 3-pointer as the Scoopers opened a 26-21 edge.
Scoopers Jordyn Johnson and Rebekah Larson scored baskets to offset a Lavin Stahl layup and make the score 30-23 in favor of Sturgis. Alyssa Gouldin converted two free throws as the first half ended to put the Scoopers ahead 32-23.
Sturgis used a 12-4 run to start the second half and open a 17-point cushion
(44-27). Barden accounted for seven of those points, and Larson completed a three-point play.
The Scoopers' lead grew to as many as 19 points
(50-31) with 1-½ minutes left in the third quarter. Huron got no closer than 14 points after that.
Barden's efforts for Sturgis featured a game-high 23 points. Gouldin chipped in with 10 points for the Scoopers, who travel to Sioux Falls next weekend to face Lincoln and Washington.
Mollie Merriam notched 14 points to pace Huron in scoring. Weeldreyer finished with 13 points.
Sturgis rebounded, defended, and ran its tempo, Sturgis head coach Mike Friedel said. He added that caused Huron to question things.
"We just kept going at them," Friedel continued. "We played with a lot of confidence and showed a lot of confidence in each other."
Sturgis wanted to get the ball into Barden's hands as much as possible today, Friedel continued. He added the Scoopers did very well in that regard.
Players are stepping up and producing positive results, according to Friedel. "Once we had them (Huron) down, we didn't let them back in it."
Huron head coach Allen Steffen said Sturgis played more physically than the Tigers and were quicker. He added his squad never seemed to get any flow.
Steffen said 3-point shooting spelled the difference in the first half. He explained Sturgis was 3-for-7 from behind the arc, and Huron was 0-for-7.
"You've got to give them credit," Steffen said of the Scoopers. "They played better than us today."
Sturgis boasts more size than Huron, Steffen continued, and he praised Weeldreyer for her efforts. Merriam hyperextended an elbow the previous night against Spearfish but played well today, he said.
