College rodeo: NAU men claim top honors at Falcon Stampede

RIVER FALLS, Wisc. - National American University won the men's division at the Falcon Stampede over the weekend. It was the first rodeo of the fall season for the Maverick men and women.

NAU racked up 860 points to out distance Dickinson State and South Dakota State in the mens events.

Weston Garrett a sophomore out of Belle Fourche won the bareback event while Tyler Manke, a sophomore from Hermosa, topped all the bull riders with a 163 score.

"I was real pleased with the effort, this being the season opener and all," said NAU head coach Glen Lammers.

Tyler English finished second in the bareback, with Nick Guy and Jesse Cotton grabbing seconds in the steer wrestling and saddle bronc riding respectively for the Mavericks.

Dickinson State University edged South Dakota State in the women's field 505-400, with NAU in third with 335 points.

NAU's Jena Lien was second in the goat tying competition.

SDSU's Jacque Murray won the breakaway roping and garnered the women's all-around title as well. Dickinson State's Seth Murphy was the men's overall winner as he won the tie down roping and teamed with fellow Blue Hawk Turner Harris to win the team roping.

NAU will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 27-28 when they compete in the Iowa Central Community College Rodeo. The Mavericks will then travel to Ames, Iowa and participate in the Iowa State Rodeo on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29-30.
