STURGIS - Ben Bartling limited Sturgis to four hits and struck out 10 Titans hitters, as Lead-Deadwood captured a 4-3 win in American Legion baseball game Saturday at Strong Field.
The game was a late addition to the schedule when the Freedom Tournament was cancelled.
"Bartling pitched a whale of a game," said Lead-Deadwood manager Jim Startz.
The two teams were deadlocked at 3-3 after six innings of play. In the top half of the seventh, Lead-Deadwood's Ben Morris was hit by a pitch and Russ Hadden survived on an error. Both runners moved up a base on a double steal. Morris came home on a fly ball by Jake Startz for the game's winning run.
Lead-Deadwood began the scoring in the first inning. Morris stroked a leadoff single. The Sundance, Wyo., athlete eventually scored on an errant throw to the second baseman. Morris is one of four Sundance players on the Lead-Deadwood squad.
Kasidy Huffman's two-run, triple in the bottom half of the third inning presented Post 33 with a 2-1 advantage.
Sturgis extended its lead to 3-1 in the home half of the fourth when Gable Gillett delivered a run-scoring single.
Post 31 sliced the deficit in half, plating one run in the top of the fifth. A bases loaded walk to Jake Startz forced in a run.
Zach Startz led off the visitors' sixth, enticing a base on balls. He later scored on an error, knotting the score at 3-3.
Morris scored two runs and had two hits for Lead-Deadwood. Hadden, Bartling and Zach Startz managed one hit each.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for Lead-Deadwood. Post 31 lost two games each earlier this week during a road trip to Chamberlain and Elk-Point-Jefferson.
"When we play well and hit the ball well, we are a tough team to beat," Startz said. "We played well up and down the lineup. It was nice to see all the pieces fit together today."
Gillett led Sturgis with a pair of hits. Kasidy and Brandon Huffman notched one hit apiece.
Kasidy Huffman pitched the initial three innings. Alan McMillin threw the next two innings. Casey Hanzlik absorbed the mound setback, pitching the final two innings.
"Lead-Deadwood came ready to play and we came out flat and went through the motions," Sturgis manager Nic Ewing said.
"They just wanted it more than we did."
Lead-Deadwood visits Belle Fourche in a doubleheader Tuesday. Sturgis hosts Hot Springs in a nine-inning game on Tuesday.
